Why do fanfic writers insist on writing characters that act the exact opposite way as they do in the books? I just read a seventh year story in which Augusta Longbottom is resentful of Neville’s friendship with Harry because she feels it will put Neville at risk. She almost wants to keep him home from Hogwarts to protect him and lectures him on ( Read more... )

Lack of memory and/or reading comprehension? They are quite long books, packed with millions of details. To some people, anything not about their favorite characters or plots is just blah-blah-blah, or, at the very least, easily forgotten.
Now, some of us approach fic as something that should be backed by careful research. Others ... just want to tell a story.

Yeah I suppose that is the problem, they don't remember what happens in the orignal books and so they go with what would make sense to them as a behavior for a crotchety grandmother.
