Of Home-Brew Fun

I have an extremely strong desire to make my own steampunk Nerf pistol, buy some leather, make a holster for it, and slowly build myself a gentleman adventurer costume ( Read more... )

Oh tell me about it.
Why am I still watching the steamfashion LJ comm? It just makes me sad.

I'm more in love with the 1930s through the 1950s when it comes to culture, fashion, and music, but I love the idea of taking mass-produced consumer goods and making them your own through ingenuity and experimentation. It glorifies do-it-yourself and proves that the average Joe can do something amazing if he puts his mind to it. But I'm not about to run out and buy a top hat.

Well, OK, maybe I will. But I need to lose weight so I can wear my tuxedo before I do.

Dragoncon costume!

BTW, I wish you could read some of whooper's old LJ entries. I just checked, and they're now friends only. But anyways, he had severe and crippling OCD. He had a surgery a few years back that corrected the problem. Before he was on several medications that had him sleeping over 16 hours a day, weight gain, and memory loss. Now, he's applying for grad school at 3 different prestigious universities (Harvard, Carnegie Mellon and Duke, I think). Anyways, the two of you are a good bit alike in a mental aspect. If he updated more than once a month, I'd recommend friending him on LJ.

I was thinking the same thing.
And I'm looking into doing some online courses through one of the UNCs, and talking to a lawyer about getting the disability payments to pay for it.

so at first I was thinking, "wow, vz is into homebrewing. Not only must he feel better but he'll also have a hobby in common with me!"

I have no idea what steampunk is and after getting my hopes up by mentioning brewing i'm not sure it can live up to it.

Alas, no.
It's a subculture with loosely-defined borders, but a core aesthetic that can most accurately be described as "Neo-Victorian." Except without all the cultural hang-ups.
