The nature of monkey was irrepressible!

PLB and myself have been home with a nasty cold over the last few days. It came on after lunch on Monday with one of those headaches where it hurts to keep your eyes open, so I had nothing for it but to sleep - apologies to those waiting for decent replies from me.

Before that, I dipped my toe back in to role-playing characters with zeemverse as a way of ( Read more... )

I had heard of it, I've just... never actually seen it. XD I'm sure you'd have been equally lost if I'd have started going on about He-Man or Ducktales or somesuch. :P

Also, I have a rather large TV. Just in case you fancied watching it on something a bit bigger than your laptop monitor. :P

In Oz, Monkey was frequently on TV, although my personal memories of it are definitely pre-'86. He-man (and She-Ra - mind you I was never big on that one) was on telly in about '82? I played with my brother's Battle-cat and punch-action He-man often enough along with a Yoda and a storm trooper - beat that for a cross-over hell.

But yeah, Ducktales is not on my radar - I'm not sure if and when it was shown on Oz TV - but if it was, it was after 1987, in which case, chances are I wouldn't have seen it, because I didn't get home from school until after all the kiddy programming had finished. I got to see a bit of Press Gang, and the Real Ghostbusters, because I set the timer going and taped them - but that was it in the pre-dinner time slots once I moved to the city.

It was definitely early/mid-80's at the very least, I remember having loads of them taped for me and we had a massive figure collection. I think I can blame those shows for far too many things in later life... He-man versus My Little Pony. I think I win. :P

You've really not seen Ducktales? How about Rescue Rangers? Talespin? I'm pretty sure they were all post-87 though. *sigh* Disney used to make some seriously cool cartoons when I was little, what happened to them? :( Not that I'd want to watch them now though, I'm sure I remember them as being better than they actually were! XD

Yep. My sister had a single pony, but I would never have used that. She also had one of those almost lifesized disembodied Barbie heads that you put makeup on, and she was also twit enough to think if you cut its hair it would grow back. Far more girly toys than me. Poochie, anyone? Oh, and she used to stick this on loop...*twitch twitch twich*.

No to all of them! (Although Rescue Rangers does sound a little familiar - maybe one of the twins had a Read Along record?) I think I maybe caught three episodes of TMNT? That's how much cartoons dropped off the radar when I moved. Saturday cartoons were ruined by freaking sport D:.

It was big in Australia. Apparently bigger than in the UK, where the dub was done, and bigger than in Japan. I have no idea why.

To give you some idea of its legacy, one of my colleagues at University used to show episodes of it before his lectures in 2005 to make sure people would be there on time.

And here's me, pimpin' mah friends Brillig do a cover of the end theme song. Sadly, it's not on their myspace or youtube.

And to give you a taste of Monkey! - here's the first scenes...

I'll have to take a listen to Brillig later. Too busy laughing at the first scenes right now.

To give you some context - most of the actors came from comedy films/J-pop bands - they're definitely not taking it seriously. And then there's the dub... I don't know if it's The Best Thing EVAR, or if it's really, really awful, and they should just talk like British People. Because the dub was done by such luminaries as Miriam Margolyes and Andrew Sachs...

*pats* Hope you're feeling a bit better.

I had to look up 'monkey' and sadly I saw it was never broadcast in the US. So, I get to be excused for not knowing. Though I do know the basics of Saiyuki, so I'm not completely lost. ;)

Yeah for getting the sibs together! I hope you all have a fine time! :D

Today's episode viewing had the wonderful moment of Monkey calling a Night Demon a 'poofter' (wait, what? Did I hear *that* on pre-6pm telly in 1983???), and the end narration containing this little gem: Monkey was trapped by desire and released by a boy priest.

*laughs*

That youtube link is for the first episode, although the series hadn't hit its stride in that.

It'll be good.... if the brother unit returns my calls D:<. Eh, I'm just making plans without him. So far we've got Australia Day pub visit, and Monday night comedy club. I'll leave the days open so sister unit can design touristy stuff to her little heart's content.

Ah yes, I understand brother units such as yours. I suspect mine is of a similar ilk. ;)

Poofter?! I had to look that up, actually and I was all 0.o when I figured it out. *giggles* That's some good telly you have over there. :D
