I have a somewhat similar problem. Once upon a time I wrote Lynncest drabbles for Terri and managed to send them to her and ask for beta. In the heat of the moment, I suppose. But now, I'm trying to read her comments and OMG I wrote what and how the hell can I ever post that in my journal?? It's impossible. :)
YES. Exactly. And mine doesn't even have anyone's mom in it. And it's a weird thing about this fandom that I admire people who can write Lynncest (even if they find it hard to post ;o)
Fading to black is pretty hard to do in a PWP. Which I think is why I tried to write one. That and seeing if I could pull something together where it wasn't ALL. About. The STORY.
I'm guessing that with the new study and career time's going to be pretty precious for you, so no worries... Although me writing is ultimately due to you and your pimp-fu.
I see you got some seriously good advice up above, so I'll just say: close your eyes, pinch your nose, and hit send! \o/ We're allowed to like sex. We're allowed to write about it and read each other's writings about it. We make it so!
It is really seriously good advice. Enough that I did manage to give the story to my grammar beta and will hopefully post the story some time today.
I think the major issue for me with PWP is that normally I focus on story, and sex as an expression of plot and character emotion is easy. Setting out to write something that's just plain old (hopefully scorching) smut seems completely different.
I'd say that you should remember that your readers AREN'T going to see the smut as an extension of you, or some fucked up sexcapade that you had with someone else's names pastede on, yay! They're thinking about the smut, not about you sitting there writing the smut. Don't worry about whether or not they'll see you as a freak, worry about whether or not the story, as you're writing it, seems to at least be from a thought that could get you off.
Furthermore, focus on the feeling instead of the machinery or making sure that the porn is VISUALLY PLAUSIBLE. I'd much rather write something that's completely astoundingly UNABLE TO EVER HAPPEN IN THE REAL WORLD instead of something someone could use as an instruction sheet for any regular sexual practice. In my experience, I want visual engagement, but not explicitly realistic. I think half of my PWPs are completely unrealistic, in the way that they'd never genuinely happen that way in the real world, but that's beside the point.
Secondly this has been really interesting for me. Writing something that doesn't have sex as an extension of a story, but for it's own sake has been quite challenging, mostly because I was trying to write something that would get me (and hopefully others) off.
And I'd agree with you on focusing on the feeling. Unfortunately, I'm completely not a visual person, I have no pictures in my head whatsoever, so I do need to really concentrate on plausibility and where limbs are - or I'll give JC two heads and Justin three arms and the ability to backflip in the middle of coming, or whatever. But, yeah. An intense concentration on realism? Not so much with the fun and interesting (or hot).
