"Altair," Alucard replied, inclining his head as well. He set the books he needed down on a table next to an elegant plush chair. The vampire gestured to the identical one in front of it.

"Please, sit." Alucard smoothed out his robes when he sat down. He was a creature of habit and method; he used to always smooth out his robes when he was alive. Remnants of the past.

"I've decided that we should start with your time period and work our forward, hmn? Make it easier to grasp these series of events." He crossed his legs folded his hands, resting them in his lap.

"Consider this as penance for the trouble I've cause to you and Sebastian. Also, I've grown restless these past days, and you are essentially walking blind into the lion's den. The only thing I ask in return is that our alliance and friendship will never be broken. So long as we understand each other, hmn?"

Alucard sat back, pouring himself a glass of wine. He had another glass for Altair, just in case the assassin had the taste for it.

"So, tell me. What was the year as you last remembered before you wound up here in Vatheon?"

Alucard leaned forward, "Hashashin, you must understand that we live in a world where everything is connected with each other. No matter how small that connection, sever it and there will be dire consequences."

The painting that sat adjacent to the vampire and the assassin became clearer as Alucard spoke. He flipped through a folder, and hands Altair a very old parchment.

"1233, Pope Gregory IX signs the Vox in Rama papal bull; decreeing that cats are agents of Satan and thus must be systematically slaughtered... Hashashin, cats help keep the mice and rat population down. If you get rid of cats, then the mice and rat populace will explode. These rodents carry fleas, that carry germs, bacteria, viruses: things that cause disease."

Alucard flipped a page of a book, "This disease spread like wildfire, spread to and through entire countries. Killing thousands everyday, millions in total. It was as if... it was the end of the world."

The vampire steepled his fingers, "Of course, the consequences and the impact of the plague was... ( ... )

Alucard shrugged, leaning back in his chair. "My friend, the advancement of medicine and medical technology during these times was next to none. The plague soon became dormant. It appeared in different parts of world later on, but with less intensity."

Alucard rested his chin in the palm of his hand, leaning on the arm of the chair. "If anything, the plague made people lose their faith in the Church. The plague hit monasteries very hard because of their proximity to the sick, those who sought refuge there. So, there was a severe shortage of clergy after the epidemic cycle. There was a mass influx of hastily-trained and inexperienced clergy members. This led to abuses by the clergy in years afterward."

Alucard looked up at the painting that was next to him and Altair. A morbid piece, but one of his favorites. The Triumph of Death. Death spares no one. Death's glory era was the Black Plague ( ... )
