First of all, not in response to YOU, but he article itself. This guy really needs to do his friggin' research before he goes off on stuff like this. I think it's funny because does he not realize that PJ himself could be considered one of those Asian-Arab evil men could lend itself to PJ himself. He's from friggin' New Zealand.

Secondly, it's a friggin' FANTASY NOVEL/MOVIE. Get. A. Grip.

Okay, all I really have to say is that too much time on your hands and a remedial grasp of the English language is a dangerous combination....

(Just to be safe, I'm going to clarify that I mean *him*, not you... *g*)

Sadly, the author delegitimizes a point I don't see as being completely ridiculous by taking it too far. I saw the film & enjoyed it very much, but noticed in one battle sequence an African-American male riding one of those elephants from hell (hee). He was an Orc, but wasn't wearing any of the scare make-up the others had on. He quite literally appeared to be just an African-American male wearing 'war paint'. The absence of minorities in the film isn't exactly inconspicuous either. In a cast of literally hundreds of people all of the roles played by the 'good guys' are European & the only minority I saw on screen was playing a savage, evil subhuman. I'm not saying the lead roles should have been given to an African-American or Hispanic or whatever. A couple minorities in the background or in one of the many battle scenes would have balanced things out.

Not all rap is simplistic, glorifies violence or denigrates women. In fact, the rappers with the current No. 1 single on the charts (Outkast) are completely innocuous. Most rap acts ( ... )

Well, none of the guys on the big elephants were Orcs - at least as far as I know. If he was black, that makes sense, since the elephant riders were from the southern lands. You do make a good point - although someone in another thread said they spotted a black guy at the coronation scene - but I think the need to balance things out in a mythical setting isn't that important.

If it was set in the modern world, of course, it'd be an entirely different story.

As for rap... you're right, not all of it is vulgar, but as a genre, it's hardly the salvation of youth that the writer was claiming it to be. And yes, Madonna, Britney, Pink and Christina aren't any better.

Wow, I think this is the first time I've ever disagreed with you! I guess there's a first time for everything.

Just don't do it again ;)

Whether the African-American was an Orc, a Mork or a Dork is irrelevant. He was the only minority in the entire film & he was a savage!

So there was one African-American in the film? I'll be sure to play Spot the Negro the next time I see the film. lol The point isn't that there weren't any minorities in the film. The point is that among the hundreds of actors & extras in the film there was only one that I saw & he was a barbarian. I could see why you would find this unimportant, but unfortunately we don't live in a mythical setting & these wierd kind of disparities affect people. Again, I'm not saying they should have cast any minorities in major roles, but what harm would it do to have some in minor roles to balance out the very ugly image of an African-American shrieking like a savage on a mutant elephant? lol

Well, when you put it THAT way. *g*
