Awkward

The first night in Hollywood wasn’t so bad. Kris got checked-in, met his roommate, and sat around with a few people singing, clapping, and generally carousing around until all hours. The next morning, he got up with his alarm, which was set for him to have enough time to go grab breakfast before a shower and still have a few minutes to spare before the first call time. Matt, his roommate, was already gone, his bed unmade.

Dutifully, Kris yawned and puttered his way through making both beds before finding pants to go with his t-shirt, glasses, and wild hair. He shuffled his feet into flip-flops and made his way downstairs, following the scent of food to find a room of milling people - all bright-eyed and dressed to their best, some already practicing for the day’s unannounced challenge. He didn’t see one pair of pajamas or one head of hair that looked mussed. Kris’s stomach sunk like a rock.

He was doomed.

“Here, honey, you need this more than me.”

Kris blinked at the source of the flamboyant voice - a tall, dark-headed man dressed in equally dark clothing with painted nails and the thinnest of lines of liner around his intense blue eyes. Kris then looked down to see a sip-lidded Styrofoam cup being proffered to him. The scent of hot coffee wafted up.

“Thanks,” Kris muttered as he stared at the cup before hesitantly taking it from the stranger. He gave the smiling man a side-eyed look. “You’re not trying to drug me, are you?” he deadpanned.

That got a full, throaty laugh. “I don’t play dirty when there are kids watching,” the man said with a smirk and slow raise of one brow.

Kris snickered against the coffee cup as a he took a sip, finding the coffee too hot to have a taste. He winced as it burned a path down his throat. “Hot,” he coughed out.

The stranger’s polite expression fell into concern. “Oh God, I’m sorry,” he said as he quickly took the cup back from Kris. “I didn’t think it would be that hot.”

“I thought you said you don’t play dirty,” Kris strained to say before coughing, raising a hand to cover his mouth.

“Because I don’t,” the man said in a rush. “Let me get you some water.”

Kris caught man’s shoulder with a gentle clutch. “Nah,” he shook his head and smiled, the pain having already receded. “I’m fine.”

That got a little roll of the concerned blue eyes. “Oh trust me, you are fine. So fine that I do stupid things like burn you with coffee,” he said, still talking fast, “but I am getting you water.”

It took Kris a moment to process everything that the man had said before he relented his hold. He watched bewilderedly as the man rushed to grab clear plastic cup and fill it with ice water from a pitcher. He traded stares with a mildly earnest expression after the man returned quickly with the second cup.

“Did you just almost hit on me?” Kris asked, face screwing in confusion.

The man’s cheeks tinged pink. “I was, but then I saw the ring,” he admitted.

Kris looked down at the hand holding the cup of water. Oh right, the ring. “Yeah. It sneaks up on ya. It catches me off guard sometimes, too,” he muttered before taking a sip of the cool water. He studied the man’s face as he drained the cup, their eyes locked and the blush in the stranger’s neck deepened. It was kind of weird - like, the dude had a crush on him or something.

Kris smiled. The stranger smiled.

“I’m Kris-“

“I’m Adam-“

The words slipped out simultaneously and both men laughed.

“Man, we’re awkward,” Kris said with a shake of his head.

Adam grinned with another light laugh. “All the best friendships start out that way.”

“Preach,” Kris said and put his fist out for a bump, which Adam returned.

Kris smirked lopsidedly. Well, he might be doomed, but at least he had a friend.
