Fic: The Known World [SGA, McKay/Sheppard, R]

This is not happy. I mean, it might be. Maybe. I'm not sure. It was not meant to be happy, but meant to be love, which I have found is neither particularly sad or happy, perhaps somewhere sort of in the middle, or maybe a third point, unrelated to the two. It probably suffers from 5000 words-worth of bad science but forgive me, high school ( Read more... )

Oh my god, this is amazing. It's the first SGA fic I've read in a long time, and I am so, so lucky I read this one. It's absolutely brilliant and beautiful and ridiculously well-crafted and I can't even really give you coherent thoughts right now.
I adore it!

I liked this story, and I am a pretty hard sell on McKay/Sheppard. (I also like Cameron Mitchell - not specifically the mention here, which is just a reference, I just like the guy - and your ETA #2.)

Also, I'm tickled that Songs: Ohia has a song called "Captain Badass." I haven't been keeping up with their output, though it reminds me that I want to see what they've produced in the last couple of years.

go go TOK essay! hee!

I don't like Songs: Ohia as a rule, but "Captain Badass" is a very treasured exception. The Pitchfork Review called it the "make-out song of 1999", and it's a very apt description; it possesses that sort of low-pressure intensity, very laissez-faire and sad and hopeful and hopeless at the same time. Quite matter-of-fact, too, and I'd almost say tragicomic except it's not very funny. Actually, it was the inspiration for the tone of this fic, though I'm not sure if the latter came out quite as I was aiming for.

What a great song! (Is it wrong that I'm mapping it to a relationship between men in a different TV series? whatever!) I'm pretty sure I have the album somewhere, but I probably wouldn't have dug it up just to listen now, so thank you!

One of the qualities I like about your story is that it's actually less down than the song... I second what danceswithgary commented, in that I appreciated it as a narrative about two less-than-perfect people still connecting, albeit imperfectly. We don't always understand the people we love (understatement!), but that doesn't necessarily make the love less real.

Is it wrong that I'm mapping it to a relationship between men in a different TV series? whatever Ha, not at all. Songs are meant to jump universes.

Understatement! Of the year. But, again - glad you liked. (Even though I didn't actually find the song as down as you seemed to. Then again, just watch - I'll listen to it now and be sniffling. Damn you, you perception-changer you!)

This is the most intelligent fandom EVER. I am a puddle of love and math.

Trufax! There are so many smart people involved in SGA, the sheer vastness of intelligence would make Einstein blush, and everyone else (myself included ;D) feel very, very dumb.

Oh god, that was brilliant. And strangely reminds me of this fucked up relationship that I have going on with my bestfriend, haha.

Also, TOK? I believe I have met my first fellow IB-ers! Hi!

Hello, Earthling! I assume you are a dorknerd like me, but I could be wrong; in any case, welcome to the Sisterhood of the Traveling GPAs IB! It's great, really. IB is so enthralling that the students don't even need to sleep, or have time to, they're so excited (which you probably already know). Still, who needs a social life? We have a diploma that's not valid in many major US universities!

It's very nice to meet you, though. Are you suffering through TOK as well?

Ahahaha, you've summed up my IB experience like that! *snaps fingers* Oh, my fond not-nostalgia...

I wonder, sometimes, why anyone does IB. Personally, I think at least 50%, including myself, are in it for the potential for complaint and snark, because there is so much to make fun of. Like, every other IBer I've met? Say "TOK," and they go, "LOL."
