Leonardo had been in a back room of the workshop, reading intently, and looking very glum compared to his usual chipper self. When he heard the knock, he was glad for the interruption and got to his feet to see who it might be.
When he opened the door to see Xephir, he nodded and managed a small smile. "Hello, Messer. This is unexpected. What can I do for you?"
Xephir might have been a little derpy, but he wasn't stupid. The man didn't look too happy about him visiting--or in general. Maybe it wasn't his fault. At least he hoped it wasn't his fault. So the guardian was fiddling with the sleeves of his robe lightly,
"I'm sorry, did I visit at a bad time?" He blinked, looking more apologetic than he should have, "I was...just wondering how the work on that painting was going? I-It's fine if it isn't done or anything!"
"Ah yes, of course. Please, come in." Leonardo stepped aside to let the Fate inside. Leonardo looked over his wildly fabulous clothing and ideas started churning and sprouting in his head like wild grape vines curling around a terrace.
"Unfortunately no, I cannot claim it's finished yet. I've only just begun painting it to be quite honest with you, Messer. I would be happy to show you what I have so far." Leonardo bowed his head respectfully before leading Xephir further into the workshop.
The largest easel in the workshop, against the back wall, looked completely black until one stepped close up to it. Just underneath the dark layers of paint you could make out faint lines. Xephir would have to immediately recognize a familiar face. "I will begin adding some colors and highlights next."
He nodded his thanks for the welcome, stepping in and silently admiring the workshop as he listened and followed after the painter. "Please, don't worry yourself over it, Leonardo. I'm more than patient." really, he had too much patience honestly, and he really wanted to see the painting get finished properly and nicely and--
Oh my God.
At first he didn't really see anything, but as he got closer he recognized the portrait in the unfinished painting. He clasped his hands over his mouth to hold back the sharp gasp and mild squealing that almost burst forth from his lips, "It's gorgeous!" Was he going to cry? He was going to cry.
Flattered, Leonardo bowed his head again, a little lower. "Thank you very much. I'm very pleased that you like it so far." The artist looked at the painting critically, just staring for a moment alongside the other man.
When he looked back at how affected Xephir was, he felt compelled to say something. "This man I'm painting, he must have been very special to you?"
