Room 324, (Pretty Much) All Day

After checking that Joan had already put up the signs, and leaving Liir a message, Kate settled back in her room, planning the party menu and making lists of things that still needed to be done.

She left the door wide open, and even put a little note on her doorframe:

Shilo wandered down the hall and knocked on the door. "Hey," she said, "I'm Shilo, and I live with Momoko in 307. I was curious about the party."

"Hi, come on in, I'm Kate," Kate smiled at her, looking up from her pile of papers. "Anything in particular you're curious about?"

And here was the part Shilo was embarrassed about. "I have no idea what Hawaiian even is," she said after a moment. "I... my time... we didn't have such a thing."

"Oh."

That... hadn't occurred to Kate at all. Not even when she asked the boy with the flying broom whether he was familiar with Hawaiian cuisine. Because he was.

"You're actually probably not alone with that," Kate said, still smiling. "Lots of people here from times and places where that doesn't mean anything. It's to do with Hawaii, which is a state, and is basically a bunch of islands."

"So then what is a luau? And are we expected to dress like the girl on the poster?" Shilo asked.

"A luau is a Hawaiian party, pretty much, and so in this case it means we're having Hawaiian foods and drinks and stuff like that."

Kate chuckled a little. "And you can dress up like the girl on the posters, but you don't have to. I mean, if Joan finds me one, I'm definitely going to be rocking a grass skirt, but it's not a requirement."

"Maybe you could make them," Shilo reasoned aloud. "There's plenty of tall grass in the preserve, after all."

"That's actually a pretty good idea. I'll have to talk to Joan about that."

"Well, if you want help with it, let me know. I only have one class tomorrow, and I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to figure out."

"I'll get back to you on that, yes. We're doing this to involve the whole floor in something, and what better way to involve people than getting all the help you can get, right?" Kate grinned.

"Right," Shilo replied, smiling herself. "If anyone else comes along and wants to help, I'll be looking for people to help me cut grass. They can meet me there."

"I'll be sure to send all eager people your way," Kate nodded. "I think we've got everything else pretty much under control."

"Great," Shilo replied. "I'm just glad to be helping out... now that I know what the hell's going on, anyways." She grinned a little. "It was great to meet you, Kate."

"Good to meet you too, Shilo," Kate smiled. "I'll get back to you on the grass thing, and I look forward to chatting with you more at the party."
