Room 324, Sunday Evening

Kate hadn't anticipated just how tiring a weekend of Fandom crazy could be when she wasn't one of the affected. Seriously. It was like being at home, times a thousand ( Read more... )

Alice was vexed, for reasons rather too long to detail. and part of plot that hasn't been posted yet NO SPOILERS She was stalking through the hallways. Breathers, breathers, breathers. Not one of them even seemed interesting enough to drink. She should choose one at random and drink, then toss the body from somewhere high while the miserable wretch was still alive. She should --

Alice stopped in the doorway, eyes alight and beaming. "Kate," she said, quite rapturously. "You found your way in?"

All was not lost. Who needed Zack for a playmate when one could have Kate?

"Haven't even really been out," Kate replied before actually turning to look who it was.

... And it was Alice. Alice from Creative Writing some terms back. Leto's Alice.

Kate looked a little bit surprised. "Um. Hi?"

"Haven't been out?" Alice laughed, shivering a bit to herself. She was positively giddy. "Staying in and snacking on the delights this dorm offers? I was playing with Zack, but he doesn't remember how to play properly. Too concerned with Mother."

She spun around, enjoying the way her skirt flared out. "Come play, Kate."

Right. Okay. None of that really made sense to Kate. Alice had to be one of the affected.

Only every other affected person she'd met hadn't had a clue as to who Kate was. And Alice... did.

Kate straightened up from where she'd been frozen mid-movement by the other girl's appearance, reaching for the clothes strewn over her bed. "Are you sure you have the right person?"

"I ..." Alice stopped, dead, and looked at Kate. Really looked.

"You're breathing?"

She sounded horrified. Betrayed, even, by this revelation.

Zack a puppet and Kate a breather? This weekend was worse by the moment.

"Uh, yeah?" Kate said, giving Alice an odd look. "Kinda important for the whole staying alive thing."

Her brow furrowed, and she took a tentative half-step closer. "Alice, are you-- are you okay?"

Alice clapped a hand over her mouth, nauseous but intoxicated. Kate smelled delicious. Kate should not be smelling delicious: Kate should be helping her break an innocent. Taking joy in the feed.

How had she been returned to humanity? It was thoroughly disgusting to consider.

"I'm well," Alice said, carefully. "I'm myself. You aren't. Let me help you."

She held out a hand to Kate. She could fix all of this. It would be easy.

Kate stayed right where she was, eyeing Alice's hand, trying not to look too dubious. She couldn't quite decide whether she should play along.

"I'm myself," she said, going for firm but falling a little short. "Why wouldn't I be?"

"No," Alice said, shaking her head. "You're a shell of yourself. Breathing and living and walking in daytime. Don't you miss the night? I can show you again."

She refused to surrender so easily. Kate could come back. And walk the night with her, newborn and desperate to feed.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

Although, it was starting to sound familiar, somehow. Not like something that had actually happened to her, but... something else. Familiar in some other way.

It was making Kate uncomfortable.

She started towards her desk, going to reach for her phone. "Maybe I should call Leto-- Oh, fuck." Yeah. Leto, as far as she knew, was still not really in a position to help. She stopped again, still keeping her eyes on Alice.

"Leto?" Alice's eyes lit up. "Yes, do! Call Leto. Tell him it's dark and Alice wants to play. He can't have turned back so easily, else I wouldn't be here at all."

It made sense, in a twisted way. Why were all of her dear comrades abandoning her? Surely Leto wasn't among their numbers.

"Sorry, Leto is currently a, a gerbil, or something." With that, Kate regained some of her usual relaxed exterior. Got some of her protective shell back up. For the moment, at least. "Last I saw him boy-shaped, he was the same as ever."

Alice recoiled, feeling sick once more. Leto had shown her the dark. Were she and Zack the only two left? And Zack the plaything of a freak in a tube.

"Come with me," she said, holding her hand out. It was something between a plea and a demand. "Let me show you what you've forgotten. How it all begins. Please."

"I really don't think I should," Kate said, some worry and confusion slipping through again. She couldn't help feeling like she was being mean, somehow. "Alice, I haven't forgotten anything. The island is messing with you. It'll be over tomorrow."

God, she hoped it would be.

Alice stepped back, face twisted with anger.

"I loathe this island," she said. "And liars and breathers and ever wanting to go on the hunt with you."

She turned on her heel sharply and stormed towards the door. Enough of this. She could hunt by herself. Who needed associates? Forget them.

"Alice, you're not going to hurt anyone, are you?"

The words got past Kate's lips before she had time to think about it.

Of course, once they were out, she did think about it. And deemed it a stupid thing, that she had even said anything. If someone was clearly unstable, and pissed off, and leaving, you were supposed to shut up and let them go.
