Meditations on the Career of Jools Siviter

"Yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look;
He thinks too much: such men are dangerous."
--Shakespeare, Julius CaesarA bunny in a Burberry overcoat has been pestering me: it wants me to tell the whole story of Jools and Lermov and the body in the hotel. Lermov's bit of rough trade is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. I'm going to ( Read more... )

What great thoughts! Reminds me of the fun I had writing Groundbait - you're right, that Lermov backstory was too ripe not to pick. I think I placed the Moscow hotel incident in 1985; I do know I checked the KGB dates. How I envy you being at the start of a fic project like this - have fun!

I've bookmarked "Groundbait" but I confess I haven't read it yet. I'm probably going to hold off on it for a bit, one, to make the anticipation last longer*, and two, so I'm not inadvertantly influenced.

* I'm the same way with Christmas presents: I hold them, shake them and weigh them and try to guess what they are, and them I open them one piece of tape at a time. It makes other people crazy, but that's half the fun.

Is his given name Julius (which would be too, too appropriate), or Julian? I was thinking Julian at first, but I could go either way

According to IMDb, his given name is actually Jules: that's how it's listed, at least.

Hugh Laurie really does own the screen in that role, doesn't he?

However, the liner notes for the MI5/Spooks DVDs have it listed as Jools, so it's probably a nickname. I think whoever wrote the IMDb entry thought that was a misspelling and cleaned it up.

And yes, Hugh cleans up good. He projects so much presense; his Jools is not someone who is ever going to get lost in a crowd.

Well, liner notes definitely trump IMDb--and I've just noticed it's "Jools" on the BBC website as well.

In which case, you're back to the Julius/Julian dilemma, because really, either of those would work nicely...but each would have its own subtle character implications.

I'm leaning toward Julius, because the implications of power and danger are so juicy. Julian---I've always liked that name, but it seems a little more buttoned-down to me. Julian sounds like he comes from old money, and is perfectly happy to continue all the family traditions...rather bland. Julius, on the other hand, is definitely out for whatever he can bag and will cheerfully bend the rules to do it.

I've so got a hot nut for this story and it's not even written yet. How pathetically Jools-lusty is that? I remember thinking it had to be Jules, until I learned otherwise. The only other Jools with that spelling I know is Jools Holland which adds nothing to the dialogue whatsoever. (And the fact that the dead cat in Detox is (I assume) Jewels, but sounds like Jools, always titillates my tush when I hear it.
And I've got your "tied up in knots" simmering on my back burner somewhere. Poor poor Danny. (Raises eyebrow and smirks.)

*evil cackle* Oh, goody! Glad I could instigate a bunny for you. No hurry!

Be prepared: I'll refer to the darn thing in my LJ, but since I have two outstanding challenge fics due at the beginning of September AND I think I'm going to do something as a follow-up to my Mummy Returns slash, Jools is going to have to stay in queue---besides, he's going to require research. And backstory. (Am already digging into the selection and training of spies...and rereading early Tom Clancy. The late Cold War. The 1980s---shudder!) The story is the easy part---the devil's in the details, and I'm too Virgo to let them slide.

I'd forgotten about the cat, since I watched "Detox" way before Spooks. *smirk*

I think you're off the hook, although I'll probably have some general questions, once I get my ass in gear and actually write something.
