What is your favorite candy or dessert?

Oh, now there's a toughie! I was saying just the other day how difficult it is to find a decent cannoli around here---but as much as they remind me of my childhood, I'm not sure that's what I'd pick. I'd just like access to them a few times a year ( Read more... )

mmm, violet pastilles! I've been in love with those since I was a teen, though they're very hard to find anywhere. maybe I should look online? bet I could find some and stock up.

the brand I used to get was Flavigny which came in a pretty metal tin. they also had rose (which I didn't love as much) and some fruit flavours too, I believe.

I' ve tried those, I think (They were violet and they came in a tin, at any rate), but I like the texture of the C Howard ones better. They're available here at World Market, or http://www.oldtimecandy.com/chowards-violet-roll.htm online. \

hmmm, I think my mom may have given me a package of those at one point - they look very familiar.

I'll hardly ever pass up something sweet (and have the hips to prove it), so it's hard to pick a favorite. If we're not talking fancy restaurant tiramisu, then I'd have to do a Dean Winchester and say PIE! Except for mincemeat, I've never met a pie I didn't like.

After that comes cake things like the gingerbread or a fabulous apple cake I made for Easter. Frosting is okay, but I really like unfrosted things best.

Tiramisu, not so much. (I can'tstand the coffee taste.) I'd rather have a good NY cheesecake. Pie is nice, but the crust has to be done well. Cracker Barrrel's Coca-cola cake is so rich even I can't finish a piece, although I only have it a couple times a year. The best cake I ever had was coconut with boiled frosting. To die for! Sadly, the restaurant has gone under, although at $6 a slice---yes six dollars!---I only had it once.

My grandmother used to bake me a coconut cake with white boiled frosting every year for my birthday. My sister has the recipe perfected but she's in MN. I love a good pound cake and I make a killer cream cheese one and a sour cream one. I've sold a couple lately in my side baking business. They ship easily. Nothing beats a good chocolate brownie with pecans baked in--an end piece!

My mom did an orange sour cream coffee cake that was really good...wonder if I still have the recipe?

I totally agree about the nutty brownies! I favor the corners, myself.

You mean these? http://www.oldtimecandy.com/mallo-cups-pack.htm Funny, I don't think I've ever had them, but I could visualize the packaging perfectly from having seen them on the shelf.

Every Christmas season during my childhood, my mom and I made my brother's favorite cookies: Choco-cherry nut drops---basically a chocolate chip cookie with nuts and bits of maraschino (of which I'm not overfond). It's not that I don't like dried fruit---just last week, I single-handedly went through a pound of dried pineapple in less than 48 hours---on the other hand, they're good for a "Some Like It Hot" flashback!

My mom (b 1921) had a thing for Clark bars and Zagnuts. During my trick-or-treating days, she always claimed those...I wasn't a big fan, so I didn't make a fuss.

Violet pastilles! I haven't thought of those in ages. Coincidentally, though, I was just thinking of good, dark, moist gingerbread today. I wish I had some right now! Love the Russell Stover molasses chews but I don't like Australian licorice at all. I love Bassetts Allsorts (especially the plain pieces), and Dutch salted licorice. Mmm, dark chocolate with raspberry. Marzipan . . . you're hitting all my buttons tonight. Whirlwind road trip this weekend; perhaps I need to lay in a supply of licorice, maybe some dark chocolate covered raspberry gels.

Oh yes, Allsorts are good stuff (except for the ones covered with the little cruncy dots---not my fav). Salted licorice sounds delectable...I *do* like salted caramel.

Salt licorice is a candy staple in places like Norway. You're probably genetically set up to like it. :D

Dried pineapple is fabulous. I keep eating up the bag of it that's supposed to go into homemade granola.

This made me laugh. You're probably right. Before the internet, the only other person I knew who really loved black licorice as much as I do was my brother.
