Gearing up for the great roadtrip

I didn't sleep well last night. Could NOT get comfortable, then woke at 5AM and had a tough time getting back to sleep. Middle age is a pain---literally!---but it's better than dying young ( Read more... )

my mom thinks the acting in Deadwood is terrific but the swearing really bothers her. I said, "Mom, real cowboys probably talked dirty all the time!" but she's of the generation where you NEVER heard cursing in a Western, Randolph Scott, John Wayne and all those guys, etc.

I wouldn't say I'm bothered---more like taking notes!---but then, John Wayne was kind of before my time. Clint Eastwood, now, that man knew how to make a Western. Too bad he's gotten all serious in his old age, the stuff he did in the 60s and 70s was made of awesome.

Bird? I've heard good things about it, but never managed to catch it. One of these days, I hope.

Actually, according to Milch, they wouldn't have historically used those words, but the cursing in Deadwood is the best way to approximate the impact that words they did use would have had at the time, if that makes sense.

Half the fun as well as the challenge of doing Deadwood fic, is trying to get the right balance and the flavor of the cursing.

Ha. Don't think I don't know what you're up to, missy. Trying to lure me into writing in the fandom cos I get to cuss up a storm on account of, it's canon. Uh-huh. Like I'm a-gonna do that just because it's a couple of my favorite actors in a genre I love.

Likely I will....

Hey, I'm sneaky and duplicitous, but I'm not that quite sneaky and...ok, maybe I am. But I wasn't thinking that until now. Because you know...Yuletide...and I know last year was a bitch in many ways.
But you could certainly offer or request Deadwood as one of your fandoms. F/W/I/W-those fics do tend to be popular in the comment department.

Out of morbid curiousity, I wandered over and had a gander at the leftovers---that is to say, the New Year's Resolution prompts. I couldn't really see myself essaying any of them. Of course, I'm only 4 eps into the first season. Plenty of fruit yet to pluck.

One of these days, I swear I'm gonna paste that hat onto the ubiquitous Che poster in place of the beret.
