Bizarre LJ coincidence

May 24, 2009 22:16

Something very strange happened yesterday.

I had been on LJ for six years and 10 days and during that time made hardly any local contacts. A few months after joining I virtually bumped into machineplay and her partner themage, who I had met in person a few years earlier. Otherwise I know of only two other Guelph LJers who read The Eramosa River Journal.

Such a small world - I know eniastoa too. And the GG. I didn't know they had a poetry slam there this weekend! It was great to meet you and djjo. It was, all things told, a great weekend.

Yes, Guelph Spoken Word has started hosting poetry slams there once a month. Check the link in my post. I won't be able to go to the one in June, but plan to attend whenever I can. It was a great time.

It was great to meet you, too. Might see you next Saturday!

I expect that FB works a bit differently than LJ? mostly because the norm in Facebook is to use your own name (well, unless you're jumpy like me) so it's easier to find people you know in real life?

LJ is a blogging tool and users tend to connect with people online who share their interests, while FB is more of a social networking tool and users tend to connect with people they already know. So the difference is not really a surprise. What surprises me is that hardly any of my local friends (most of whom are interesting people, and a few are good writers) maintain blogs that I know of, either on LJ or elsewhere.

(shrugs) Too bad! The people I know in real life follow pretty much the same pattern.

Aren't you vaneramos from LiveJournal? I'm just sayin' is all... :-D

I'm jealous that they got to meet you. I'm still stuck in NJ for now.

Heheh. Someday we might meet at a poetry reading, but we will probably be expecting one another.

I have a small confession to make. When I started using LJ, I realized immediately that I was going to want to make enough use of it to not want to see it go away, and since I could, I paid for an account. One of the features that members who do not pay don't get is access to the full search tool, including search by locality. I was interested in what sort of journals Guelph people might have, but most all of them were by young people writing about things not really in their lives they wouldn't care about in a year. I spotted one by an old friend of machineplay's who was also an old friend of mine, hers, and yours that were interesting and substantive ... but I didn't then feel ready to greet strangers online. It was only after machineplay added my journal that I felt comfortable saying hello. A shame, when what I enjoy in your journal now is the same as what I enjoyed in twenty entries that showed up that day in August, 2005 ( ... )
