Darla slid into Caritas carefully. There were posters up with her face on them, and while her attack Tuesday night had fulfilled its objective, the tranquilizers that she had been injected with had put her in danger. Tonight, she was going to be more careful. To that end, she fingered the small bottle she'd stolen from James at the clinic. She'd drug her next victim -- singular, thank you. Which would afford her the opportunity to take said victim home and... entertain herself in privacy for awhile.

Rory popped a cherry into her mouth, idly looking around the room and taking it in. She spotted a blonde woman who she couldn't place - yes, Rory had seen her before, but she couldn't remember the context. Not a student, not a teacher...someone she'd seen around town or something? She shrugged it off and went back to watching the stage.

Darla smiled as her gaze crossed that of a delicate girl. Perfect. She looked like a fawn, a porcelain figure of a dancer... like a delicious snack.

Darla began working her way closer to the stage. It would be easier, but less fun, if the girl didn't realize she was being stalked. Then again, she had the chloroform in her pocket. All she had to do was get close enough.

Rory glanced over, and noticed the woman approaching her. A sudden feeling of apprehension flooded over her as her brain fought to recall why she had a sense of recognition.

And then she remembered the posters. Darla.

Rory eyed the entrance casually, and realized there was no way she could get across the room without being intercepted, if that was what Darla was planning on. She carefully set down her drink and calmly, swiftly, made her way towards the back exit. She could break into a run in the alley there, maybe call Angel, and everything would be just fine.

***

Darla saw the moment the girl realized she had been targeted, and smiled. She'd obviously been warned, and she obviously knew the best way to protect herself was to get away. Not to run, because running made you something to be chased. Someone had taught her what to do. Someone would care if she was hurt.

Perfect.

Darla turned and left through the front entrance. Making her way with predatory swiftness to the back, she reached the back exit just as the door fell shut behind the girl. "Nice try," she called out. "But you lose."

Rory whirled around to face her, mentally kicking herself for leaving her stake in her room. How could she have been so utterly careless?

"Go away," she said, much more firmly than she really felt. "Or I'll scream. Someone will hear. And then you'll really be in trouble."

***
vampire_darla
"Oh, no," Darla purred, coming closer. "Someone might hear. Someone might come." She reached into her pocket and popped the cap off the small bottle of chloroform, letting it saturate the washcloth she was carrying. "Go ahead. Scream."

Rory narrowed her eyes, moving back and stumbling slightly. She threw out an arm to steady herself, and hit a wall.

Nowhere to go.

She opened her mouth to let out a cry for help.

Darla jumped forward and clapped the sickly-sweet smelling cloth over Rory's mouth and nose. "It's lucky that I don't have to breath, isn't it?" she laughed in Rory's ear.

***

Rory struggled and screamed against the cloth for a few seconds before she felt herself dizzying.

And everything went black.

The little girl slumped into her arms in a very satisfactory manner. Darla dropped the cloth and bottle of chloroform where they stood, and scooped her victim up into her arms. Making it from the alley behind Caritas to the Arms Hotel was fairly easy, since the Arms was only a block or so away.

Darla carried her through the deserted lobby and down the stairs to her basement suite. Once there, she pulled sheets off her bed and ripped them into shreds, until she had a set of long strips. She tied the girl's hands and feet together, and looped a length over her eyes.

But she didn't gag her. Darla wanted to hear her scream.

The girl was still limp when Darla dropped her in the small closet and shut the door, propping a chair in front of it to keep it from opening accidentally. Then she waited for the show.

The first thing Rory was aware of was the pounding of her head.

She opened her eyes and was face with darkness. Gasping, she struggled to touch her face, and found she couldn't move her hands. She was tied up. Blinking, she felt her lashes brush against something. She kicked her feet - also bound, as she discovered - and felt them hit something.

"Help! Help me!" she screamed as she moved around, trying to get a feel for the amount of space she had to work with.

Darla laughed. "So sorry, but no one's going to help you here. Wait. No, I'm not sorry." She went to lean against the closed closet door, trailing fingernails up and down the wood. "Do you know, some of the clothes in there are still damp? Angel soaked them with holy water. Hurt like hell, but it just proves that underneath it all, he's still my Angelus. Do you know Angel? He usually goes for the blondes, so probably not. He keeps trying to threaten me, to make me stop hurting the students. Which is just silly, because what else am I going to do to entertain myself? Haven't killed any of them yet... I don't think, unless the girl I stabbed the other night died." Darla shrugged.

"Question is... what to do with you? Ripping out your throat and leaving you at the school gates is tempting... but rather unimaginative. My dear boy was always imaginative. I suppose I could always drive you insane and send you home... but then, he did that with Dru, so again, not the most original plan. Besides, it might take too long to break your mind, your sanity. I might just get bored and revert to plan A. And I hate doing a half-assed job."

***

"If you hurt me, it'll just be a matter of time before Angel kills you. That is, if no one else gets there first," Rory said, her voice shaking. She kicked in the direction of Darla's voice, her feet connecting with the door and shaking it on its hinges. "There are people with stakes. Posters with your picture. Half the school is on a watch for you. And I have people looking out for me who can and will destroy you without hesitating."

***
vampire_darla
Darla leaned back away from the door as it rattled beside her. "Ooo, you mean I might have to actually exert myself to get away with this?" Darla laughed. "You have people who care for you? Are looking out for you? Hmmm. That gives me an idea. What's your name, little girl?"

***
rory__gilmore
"Rory," she said without thinking. She swallowed, kicking at the door again. "Let me out. Let me out now! I can promise you, if you don't let me go now, and unharmed, you'll have more problems than just holy water on your clothes."

***
vampire_darla
'"Me and my five big brothers are going to come beat you up'?" Darla mocked her. "Thing is, if I just let you rot in that closet, no one will know where you've gone, so they won't know to come after me. Rory. What would that feel like, Rory? To slowly wither away inside a small, dark space? To scream and beg and plead and still never, ever be free? Would you give anything to get out, in the end? Even your soul?"

***
rory__gilmore
Rory began to shake uncontrollably.

"They'd know. They'd know it was you. Angel would," she said, her voice wavering. "And when they come looking for me, you'll wish you'd never done anything to me." Her bound hands searched along the closet floor blindly for something, anything to work with.

Nothing.

"My soul?" she asked as it slowly registered with her. "No. No, not again. I'd rather die in here."

***
vampire_darla
"Again?" Darla questioned. "What, has there been a positive epidemic of souls being returned to their original owners? You don't seem to be undead to me. I can hear your heart beat, smell your blood, your fear. You're telling me that you'd much rather be dead and dust than be a vampire? Then again, it's not exactly like you get a choice."

***
rory__gilmore
"No, I'm not letting you bite me. I'm not letting you near me. I'm not letting another one of you hurt me again!" Rory yelled, throwing her weight against the door. She fell against it in defeat. "Please - please just let me go."

***
vampire_darla
Darla opened the door to the closet. She knelt so her face was on level with Rory's and yanked down the blindfold over Rory's eyes. Darla shifted into her demonic face right before her captive. "You want goodness and mercy from me? I DON'T HAVE A SOUL. There is no mercy in me. And the fact that you beg to be killed rather than be made into a vampire makes me want to make you an undead bloodsucker and turn you loose on your friends and loved ones. How many of them do you think you could kill before they realized exactly what you were? Imagine their faces at the moment when you're about to kill them. It's really such a wonderful image."

***
rory__gilmore
Rory swallowed.

"No," she said simply, much more bravely than she felt. "Kill me. Or let me go. Angelus wouldn't turn me. I make a better victim, anyway."

***
vampire_darla
Darla smiled. "All right." She pulled out a knife and cut the bonds around Rory's feet, then rose to her own and stepped back, giving Rory plenty of space.

***
rory__gilmore
Rory stood up quickly, reeling slightly from dizziness. She eyed the path past Darla, and twisted her hands against their bonds.

"And what are we playing now?" she asked, suddenly more terrified than before.

***
vampire_darla
"You asked me to let you go, and I am." Darla tilted her head to the side and favored Rory with an amused, condescending smile. "Don't look a gift vampire in the mouth, hmmm? Then again, as soon as you turn your back on me I might be right there to grab you again. You never know."

***
rory__gilmore
Rory narrowed her eyes.

"My hands. I can't go anywhere if my hands are stuck like this. Can't open the door, after all."

***
vampire_darla
Darla shook her head. "No imagination. And not a great deal of initiative. What a shame." She stepped closer to Rory and raised the knife that she had used to cut the bonds around Rory's feet. But this time, she laid just the point gently against the pulse in Rory's throat. "But maybe you don't want to run away. Maybe you want to stay. You see, Angelus may have seen you as a victim, but you've kept fighting me. You'll lose, but you kept fighting." Her voice dropped to a murmurous whisper. "Are you sure you want to go?"

***
rory__gilmore
Rory held her breath, her eyes wide and trained on Darla's face.

"Yes," she whispered. "Please, just let me go."

***
vampire_darla
Darla trailed the knife down Rory's throat, down her breastbone, down her arms to where the binding was around her wrists, and sliced through it. "All right then. Hide and seek? I close my eyes and count to one hundred and then I try and catch you?"

***
rory__gilmore
"Okay," Rory said, starting to slowly move past Darla, her heart beating so hard she could hear her pulse throbbing in her head. "No cheating, now."

***
vampire_darla
"Would I cheat?" Obligingly, Darla closed her eyes. "One, two, three..."

She had a small, fixed smile on her face. The sort when someone knew a secret you didn't.

***
rory__gilmore
Rory broke into a run.

She ran up the stairs, out into the unfamiliar lobby, and out of what she recognized to be the hotel once she was outside.

Her lungs burning, she didn't stop until she caught sight of the school - completely ignoring the slightly confused troopers as she raced past. She pressed her back to a wall, frantically digging her phone out of her pocket, and hit 3, then 2, then 9 on her phone, leaving messages at each number.

She brushed the hair off her face with shaking hands, and headed into the dorms with a final look over her shoulder.
