It's SO TRUE. Because a tattoo is much more than an adornment, it's even much more than a life statement... It's great that you believed to your intuition and stopped.
I know that everybody is different, and all, yet I want to say something about rock-music-related tattoos.
I am 40 now, and I am not listening to the music I used to listen when I was 20-25. Since then not only my taste had changed - my whole understanding of the world had changed, and the world itself had changed, too. It's not that now found the ideas and images that I idealized back then stupid or empty, but I don't find them as powerful and true as I used to when I was younger. And I am so glad that the idea of getting a tattoo didn't occurred to me then! There's nothing still wrong for me with "I am the Lizard King, I can do everything", but I don't feel this way any longer, you know... So may be it's better to leave the rock-rebel stuff to the T-shirts...

It's good that you decided to walk away before it did become this blob of ink on your arm that you regret.. So yays!! (:
