Not really sure. Different concerts have meant so much at different times. In chronological order: Emerson, Lake & Palmer in 1977 with a full orchestra; Moody Blues on their reunion Octave tour 1978; Heart and Blue Öyster Cult in Aloha Stadium Labor Day 1981; Gary Numan in the Hammersmith Odeon in 1983; Weird Al at the Brown County Fair circa 1986 ( Read more... )

By the time ELP's "Works" tour got to STL, they were losing so much money that they sent the orchestra home. It looked so goofy with all the risers for the orchestra sitting empty behind them. Sure, Keith had his grand piano spinning in mid-air and Carl had some crazy drum shit, but i remember that i was sitting there and couldn't wait for that concert to be over. Of course, it could have been the drugs i was taking that night too. Kiel Auditorium...my misspent youth. Both gone forever.

Sorry you missed the orchestra. It was actually pretty cool. They did an abbreviated Pictures at an Exhibition. We talked to some other concertgoers who had seen the previous show four nights earlier in Milwaukee (I was in Madison) and said it wasn't nearly as good and they had done an orchestrated version of Tarkus. UGH! I remember hearing they had lost a ton of money doing the tour and got to see them again twice that fall when they did a scaled-down tour for profit. (I was a huge ELP fan at the time.) I enjoyed each show, but the orchestrated one was awesome.
