I do think that people need to be far more aware of the effects of their actions and how they spend their resources. I don't think a return to a barter system is necessarily a good change to work toward.
You have a dollar and you are hungry. You can buy a bag of potatoes, and plant some of them, if you have any land. If not you have to buy your food from somewhere else. You can't control how your neighbour will spend your money after selling you that lovely delicious organic apple, but you do still have to eat, and it's better to spend the money on a delicious organic apple than on a mass-produced chocolate bar. Sometimes 'least-worst' is the best you can do.

I would say one major problem with money is that it corners us into believing that everything has an exchange value. We ask ourselves: "How much is an hour of my time worth?" "How much is a human life worth?" "Can we place a monetary value on species X?"
When I hear questions like that, I know we have a serious problem.
