Peak Oil and President Bush

Today, President Bush again addressed the issue of Peak Oil, in a round-about way. He approached it from the angles of national security and CO2 pollution. Despite the way he framed his remarks, the issue of Peak Oil is clearly looming in the background.

but even keeping the oil flowing to us is not sustainable.

You are absolutely right. Unless we have a goal of using zero oil, it is unsustainable. Not to mention that if we burn up all the available oil, we'll probably ruin the climate.

We need political leaders who are not tied to the oil machine and are willing to dedicate real resources to investigating alternative energy sources AND use the ones we already have available, as imperfect as they are.

Better still, we common citizens need to be leaders, within our social groups, families, and communities, to help everyone see the problem we are facing, and to help them face up to what they can do to make a difference.

We also need to focus on conservation and efficiency. We should have a goal to reduce energy use by 80% by conserving in all areas, and improving efficiency. At the same time, we need truly sustainable energy sources, such as wind, sun, and water.

Burning ethanol or any biomass will end up creating CO2, and depleting the soil... plus making corn ethanol takes more fossil fuel energy than you can get out of it.
