PCOS is tied in with a pre-diabetic metabolism, so they Rx'd me something called Metformin. It targets insulin resistance, something I was showing signs of. I didn't realize I'd been showing signs of it all my life: hunger was never something I could casually address, it was always a big low-blood sugar freakout. Because of that, I've always eaten ( Read more... )

I know EXACTLY of what you speak - I am on Metformin, and I rarely get those "I WILL SKELETONIZE THE NEXT SMALL CHILD IF WE DON'T EAT SOON" cravings.

I am wondering if I have something similar as I have been getting the shakes, fogginess and OMG I AM SO HUNGRY

tho when I went to Kaiser I was told by endocrinologist that there is no such thing as insulin resistance

just had blood work done so we shall see, but I am glad you are getting things figured out for yourself

You might. I don't know why your endo would say that. "insulin resistance" might be a misnomer, but there's definitely something happening and it seems to be happening to a lot of people. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/metabolic%20syndrome/DS00522/DSECTION=causes
Did they give you the glucose fast test?

I actually asked to be prescribed the metformin because I'd done my research on PCOS. My doctor knows that some things work for some people, some don't, so he's good about letting me suggest stuff and go with my instincts. Some people would find that approach a little too hands-off, but I like knowing what's going on and presenting my own ideas. So it turns out this is working for me - but I know it's not for everyone.

they have not given me the test yet - I 'just' got my results back and everything was 'normal' (tho my fasting bloodsugar level was at 99 which I think is borderline) and my TSH is up nearly a full point from last year (wtf?)

tho it is nice to see that my cholesterol is still awesome at 156.

and my endo at Kaiser was an asshat - but now I have to see if I can get into see another endo within BS

sigh - such bullshit
