Have you ever referred a friend for a job where you currently work? I am about to do so with the thought that if I have an opportunity to pick someone I already like and whose work I know and admire, I would rather do that than take my chances on getting someone that management just pulled out of their ass. Like last time. The last new hire was ( Read more... )

I'm glad you have a great work situation/environment! I'm always afraid of being surrounded by yucky coworkers (even though they are just part time jobs). Yay for your friend joining you!

Many congrats to Russ on the new job!! And much good luck to YOU on getting your friend into your workplace.

I know what you mean about the VW...I've been supremely jealous of my oldest daughter, Megan, ever since she bought her 2002 VW Jetta last year. The gas mileage is awesome, and the German engineering is marvelous, especially when compared with the crap that comes off the assembly line of most American automobile manufacturers.

All the VWs I've had I've loved! They are wonderful cars with low maintenance. The only problem I've ever had with them is overheating and all you need to do is open up the vents, point them away from you, and turn the heat and fan on "High". Within minutes, you're good to go. Everyone I know that has an SUV is bumming right now, in particular, a Suburban owner and Hummer owner I know. In San Diego, the cheapest gas is $3.39/gallon so some of these people are spending $200/week in gas. The Mercedes, if I use cruise control, gets about 28 mpg these days. Of course it's been in the 90s out here so I am using the A/C a lot which does use gas.

Surprisingly enough, newer model vehicles, those manufactured in 2000 or after, are aerodynamically designed to use LESS fuel with the air conditioning ON than with the windows down. I know, we were all taught that using the air uses more fuel, but apparently like so many things, that has changed with time. Living in SC, I use my air pretty much eight months out of the year, and on the highway, the noise factor is just not feasible with the windows down. On cooler days or at night, I can open the moon roof and there is plenty of cool air coming into the car.
