I have decided to give Facebook a rest for a few weeks. I'm spending far too much time on it, and I seem to keep finding myself embroiled in silly arguments which end up with me feeling frustrated, angry and upset. This will probably be a temporary measure but I'm looking forward to spending more time on more interesting things. Which will possibly ( Read more... )

YAY!

There's been a bit of foreshadowing. I'll give it a few more episodes and see.
I have faith in Joss.

Also watched BBC's new primetime fantasy drama Atlantis.

I have no faith in this.

The only Joss Whedon thing I ever liked was Firefly. Well, and Dr Horrible. Never got into Buffy or Angel. I have less faith in him than most not to go down a formulaic route and cram the cast with pretty uninteresting people.

I wasn't expecting much from Atlantis. It's from the same stable as the recently-ended Merlin so it's going to be cheesy sword-and-sorcery. I commented to d_floorlandminethat it made Xena Warrior Princess look like a faithful retelling of the Greek myths!
I was particularly irritated that they shied away from the actual origin story of the Minotaur (also, apparently in Atlantis now, not Crete?) and instead just made it 'a man that was cursed by the gods'. Sorry, but the actual Minotaur story has magical bulls, sexy cow costumes, people being cursed to ejaculate scorpions, and poor old Daedalus having a thoroughly shitty time trying to invent solutions to everyone's problems. Much more fun (though probably not ideal for prime-time).

Joss is my master now.
So, I am not uninvested, but I think he is a genius when it comes to writing relationships or humans.
In Joss I trust.

But Joss and me, we been around the block.

IIRC, they addressed that.

The rest, people ejaculating scorpions, not something I had heard of.

Yeah, the Skye (Sky?) plot seemed a bit daft. She was all, "I am Wikileaks you are the Gubmint oh wait no you have the cool toys so I'm on your side now..." - and also no explanation for why THEY trusted HER when five minutes previously she'd been trying to expose them from the back of a minivan.

I'm guessing the arm thing was what made him flip from disgruntled former employee to psycho avenger... but yes, it wasn't really explained.

Someone called it 'American Torchwood' and that seems about right to me.

Okay, it wasn't great, but it wasn't Miracle Day bad.

Miracle Day was Torchwood's attempt to 'do' American-style SF thriller, and was deeply flawed in a lot of ways. I think miss_squiddy is more referring to the first series of Torchwood - the 'team building' episodes when Gwen was first introduced. Sky(e) is a bit of a Gwen character - an ingenue, a bit too curious for her own good, and in the early episodes I suspect will be the 'Doctor Who Girl'; the character that the rest of the team get to explain things to us through.

I know what you mean about the farcebook thing. I've been feeling a bit swamped by it's fast paced impersonal nature lately. Now all I have to do is get to scribbling here again.

I've not watched Atlantis yet, I've also not seen a good report about it yet, but I'll give it a try for myself anyway.

If you liked Merlin, you'll probably like Atlantis. It's all pretty brainless but at least fast-paced and with some pretty costumes (Ariadne and Pasiphae in particular get some great outfits).

I got into Merlin after initial doubts and quite enjoyed it, in a shallow mindless entertainment sort of way. I think it was the same lack of accuracy and putting modern actions/values into a historical setting that initially grated on me. Exactly the same thing that was putting me off Atlantis when I watched it last night. I'll probably give it another go and see if this one grows on me as well, but I'll not be heartbroken if I miss it.

I couldn't get into Merlin at all - I'm afraid I found most of the cast uniquely punchable! Also, people playing fast-and-loose with Dark Ages history is guaranteed to make my blood boil. If only because what was actually going on in that period (or might have been going on - records are sketchy at best) is actually way more interesting than some be-tunicked Bieber-alikes' adolescent angst.

Have you seen Orphan Black on BBC Three? I'm quite enjoying it so far. I think the first few episodes should still be up on iPlayer.

Yeah, I've been quite enjoying Orphan Black. Though I'm having my usual problems of not finding most of the characters particularly likeable - with the possible exception of Felix.

I don't think they are supposed to be likeable. Except Matt Frewer.

Oh, we're not as far on as his character on BBC yet - only up to episode 3.

Also, Max Headroom is still ALIVE?!

Yeah. I did put a post up about three hours before I disabled my account, letting people know what I was doing and why, but obviously not everyone would have seen it! Sorry if I worried you.

S'okay...
Just thought I would check up on...

Sad that LJ was the last place I checked.

But LOL - Hey ho - No room to talk - I need to do more LJ'ing... I shouldn't bitch about the lack of LJ content if I dont contribute to it myself... (And find Dreamwidth too much hard work...)

Glad you are okay :-)

OK might be a stretch - I need to see my GP and go back on citalopram again I think. Which sort of sucks but I'm not coping well in a number of ways at the moment.

Dreamwidth I never really got into, and to be honest I don't think it's any busier than Livejournal these days. Just a small core of diehards (and fanfic writers) still posting there regularly.

Thanks for checking up, anyway - nice to know people care!
