Tech support ad fail

Ugh. There's TV ad running at the moment advertising a backups service called Mosy. Now, it may be a good service, run by technically competent people, but when the ad shows someone having to recall backup files because they spilled coffee on their keyboard, it doesn't inspire confidence ( Read more... )

I've seen it happen a few times, drink spilling onto the keyboard causing a short circuit which fried the hard drive's controller. In most cases of drink spillage the motherboard is fried and you have to at minimum remove the hard drive and plug it into another computer (externally or internally), which most people are probably not comfortable doing.

Seriously? Never seen it happen. I've spilled stuff on keyboards loads of times and worst case scenario was that I needed a new keyboard. Mostly they just need to be dried out and they're fine again.

It does sound like this company is just trying to make money out of people who don't understand how computers work, though. There was a similar one a while ago for a remote networking service which had a guy in a meeting having left important data at his office, and complaining when his current method of access (highly trained carrier pigeons) brought the entire PC to him that they had forgotten the keyboard. Like it matters which keyboard you have plugged in!

You are surely joking. The keyboard isn't even connected to the hard drive controller. I find it amazingly unlikely a short circuit in one would cause any disruption in the other. Apart from anything else their power comes from completely different parts of the PC power train.

If the drink was spilled on a laptop keyboard fair enough it could happen but for a standard PC no way on earth is what you claim possible.

I assumed it was refering to laptops as that happening to a desktop computer is just too absurd even to contemplate.

If you mean Mozy they're actually a really well priced off site back up service.
Just back from reptile so can't recall which NAS vendor they're backed by but it's a decent and serious offering. As others have said frying a key board can have odd knock on effects.

They may well be, but their ad doesn't inspire confidence.

I fully expect that the technical people had no involvement in the advert
and undoubtably cringe when they see it too.
