I am so glad that this wonderful thread has been rescued and brought back on topic after its little detour. Excellent posts VaRus!! I especially loved your description of Olly which is so accurate. Reading it makes me wish I had more time to enjoy his Billy.
Wonderful writing!

I enjoyed your post contrasting Corey and Olly.
I've always maintained that at heart - for a lot of Billys, their story is one of triumph in the midst of adversity; heartwarming and inspirational, we get our happy ending. For Olly's Billy - the road is much less certain. The dance is but a transient, ephemeral joy - a refuge from the harsh realities of his world. But when the music stops, there is always the tribulation to go back to. He ends the show successful in one way, but he leaves us with the picture of a Billy that is at heart unfulfilled - still searching for that elusive 'something', held back by his own neurosis ( ... )

Thanks, Justin, I appreciate your words very much.
I agree with almost everything in your analysis. Although it looks like we considered the story and its interpretations from different perspectives: while I was more interested in connections with generic cultural patterns, you mainly looked at it in psychological terms, with great attention to the concrete details. And nobody did it better than you.
It would be interesting to know why Olly's particular interpretation did come out so nontrivial and complex in many senses. Was it conscious development of a carefully predefined conception by the director, or it just happened inadvertently because there's something inside Olly and he just followed his instincts and intuition? I suspect, by the way, that he is reading our writings with amazement and may not recognize his own creation...
