Anyone who ever has to stay in a shelter involuntarily knows that all you think about is how to make sure you never come back. I had to do that one night in Denver in October 1990, due to a string of bad financial luck. I'm glad it was there. I'm glad I've never had to do it again. It wasn't awful...it was just depressing. Though I did have to split a single bed at a YMCA with my partner for about 3 weeks one other time...technically we were homeless, but we had a bed in the school bus I had purchased. But it was getting too cold to sleep there at 5000 ft up in the desert in December. Glad it was there. Glad I haven't had to do it again.
