It is indeed called frottage when a man and woman do it.
Or more vulgarly, dry humping. Although there was nothing very dry about it last time! (I didn't know one could actually soak through denim...)
My all-time biggest complaint is that it's messy. Even in the shower.

As for the second: manual sex, jerking off, jacking off, a hand job.
It doesn't really qualify as frottage.

I can see where they would be a bit defensive that "it's real sex." You know my attitudes. Many men tend to have them as well.
The old "first base,(kiss) second base (tits), third base (manual), homer (sex)" mentality.

As for our boys, I go with what works. Personally, I don't write much frottage because I don't find it comfortable myself. Someone always gets chafed.

To me, a hand job or jerking off is different than what I'm describing. I'm talking about where the man who's getting off is doing most of the work, thrusting against his partner as in frottage, but where the partner puts his or her hand under his penis or partly wrapped around it for him to thrust against/into. So the partner is doing a little bit of active handwork, but there's also all this full-body contact and large body movements (i.e. thrusting) as with intercourse or frottage, and the hand part is mostly just to provide firm pressure and a tight enclosure for him to thrust into. This kind of thing seems like a very different experience than what I would call giving someone a handjob. (And now I'm also wondering whether a roughly equivalent technique could work on a woman, and what it would be called then.)
