So I told myself I would take this whole weekend off, because the last six months have been so stressful and the last two especially so non-stop-worky-work. I was really psyched to just do nothing. Bliss. Of course it would be sheer bliss.

Right?

Well, as it turns out, it was a lot harder than I expected! First off, I tried to sleep in really ( Read more... )

Do you like historical novels? I just read "The Aviator's Wife" (about Anne Morrow Lindbergh), which just came out, and liked it a lot. "The Age of Desire" (about Edith Wharton) is another good one.

Or if you feel like some romantic fluff, "Attachments" by Rainbow Rowell -- no, I'm not making that name up! -- is very funny and sweet.

Oh, and did you ever get to read "The Night Circus"? I can't remember. It was REALLY good.

I second "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern. It's the best recently published book I've read in a very long time. Absolutely amazing.

I'm excited about this! I just bought it for my roommate for her birthday, based on you two's recommendation. Shamelessly intend to read it when she's done. Shhhh don't tell ;)

The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides, which came out last year, is a modern riff on some of your favorite Victorians. That might be fun.

I started watching tv in grad school; for years before that I couldn't be bothered to remember when anything was on and mostly used the tv for movie rental purposes. But in grad school, reading took on a certain weight, so I started watching a bit of tv for story I didn't have to analyze so seriously. Until I published an article on Buffy, oops.

You would not believe (well, probably you would!) how many people I know in grad school who've said the exact same thing - and it's true of me as well. At least, I was a one-show-at-a-time type of girl (I went through a Just Alias phase, for instance, and a Just LOST phase). Now though, I watch all these sitcoms and everything... my friends too, we all find it a strange change!

Not sure whether or not I'm in a place to enjoy something that makes fun of the Victorians. I'm feeling rather protective of them atm :)

It doesn't make fun of them; it's not neoVictorian (at least not in the "a modern novel about the Victorians" sense) -- it's a novel that brings the marriage plot into the present day (or almost, the characters are in college about the same time I was).

I'm not much good for recently published novel recs (though I did like the new Casson family book that came out last year - start with Saffy's Angel if you've somehow missed the series so far).

I did read Saffy's Angel, when you first praised it on your journal some years ago! But this reminds me that my 12-year-old niece might need a copy for her next birthday :)

I was wondering if I'd already gone on about it. I am glad you read it though *g*.

I wish I could rec stuff, but most of my reading has been non-fic.

http://breathingbooks.livejournal.com/1087869.html has the fic I read last year, but...
