I must say, this paragraph from the Hollywood Reporter has to be the most discouraging news relating to a classic adaptation that I've heard in a long time!

I'm pretty sure that would be the correct way to describe it, yeah. Because "father's unexpected return" is about as unlike "father's death" as a motivating plot event can be.
