Downton Party

Jan 29, 2012 10:34

A friend of mine is having a dinner party for the last episode of Downton Abbey series two, which airs in America a week from today. Yay! Delightful!

But.

Period costume is strongly encouraged. With only one (busy) week in which to find something, on a miniscule budget, what on earth can I wear?

tv, costume dramas, friends

Do you have a long skirt of any sort? I was able to make a fairly decent Victorian costume for a Christmas party last month, with a long skirt left over from an old choir performance. And a DA-era skirt wouldn't even have to be THAT long -- it could just be long-ish, I think. Add a nice long-sleeved blouse and some costume jewelry and do your hair a la Sibyl or Mary if it's long, or Edith if it's shorter, and you're good to go.

I agree with the above.

And if you like hats, I've noticed cloche hats have come back in style; I've seen them at Target and JCP.

PBS was selling costume jewelry and hats. I would have suggested them for inspiration but I can't find it now. I think there was legal trouble because they labeled them "the Downton collection."

Geesh. You'd think PBS would be allowed to sell a "Downton collection," seeing as how it's partially responsible for the show's huge success!

A nightshirt. Because of the stuff in S1, it's canon.

Jet black beads? Any sort of tea length skirt? They actually spend a chunk of the season dressed very sensibly (Mary dons an apron at one point!) so that gives you so flexibility.

Well, I know fancy's more fun, but you could go as one of the servants. Mrs. Patmore or Daisy could be very easy, or all black like Mrs. Hughes or O'Brien.
