The Little White Horse!

If you're like me and still read children's books, you'll know that when you finish a new one, you often think, "that was cute." Occasionally you think, "wow, I bet I would have loved that as a kid." And on the rarest of occasions, you think, "I love this!"

I love The Little White Horse.

It seems like I read this book a couple of years ago. The title is so familiar. But I can't remember a thing.

Bah!

It's very cute, you should reread it if you're in a kiddish mood. This book really made the English countryside seem like a fairytale* place. Funny... I think to me anything set in pre-modern-times England is as good as a fantasy. I mean, the Secret Garden might as well be in Narnia for the otherworldly thrill it gives me.

*I originally had "fairyale" here. If I ever open a brewery...

I read this a few years ago when I heard it was JK Rowling's favorite book as a child, and I thought it was pretty good. The age thing weirded me out, too, but I loved the descriptions of the food and the mystery and the writing.

I'm so glad you enjoyed The Little White Horse. I don't remember the age thing squicking me but I was pretty young when I read it. Nor did I have a problem with the title, again because I didn't have any expectations of it at that age.

So not really a helpful post, except: yay!

Also, am very very suspicious of the film. How could they capture the magic of it? I'm afraid it would turn into generic fantasy or be completely ruined like The Dark is Rising. *sigh*

I saw the film referenced in a review but assumed it was old, but after writing the above I did more poking and apparently it hasn't come out yet. I don't think I want to see it. According to the article I read, they've cast pretty people and upped the action and gotten rid of everything "twee", which I take to mean the tea and cakes and pretty dresses and the Power of Politeness. It'll probably be just a horrid generic The Chronicles of Spiderwick Are Rising sort of thing.

I love this book. I'm a big Goudge fan. The Dean's Watch is the best of all, though. You HAVE to read it! xxx

(Apparently I also need to re-read The Little White Horse since I remember nothing about it.)

Is it a children's book? From the one cover on amazon it looks like a romance. Will definitely read it if I can find it, either way!

Um... it's kind of a children's book, but not like The Little White Horse. More twee and hot-chocolate-to-the-soul than fantasy. Maybe for older children. And, yeah, there's a romance in it, but that's more of a secondary plot. xxx
