Not to quibble, but I think hard-line Republicans already "know" and no amount of evidence to the contrary is going to change their minds.
Consciousness is a cool thing: it's an entirely subjective experience. I suspect if you came up with an objective threshold for consciousness, babies wouldn't actually pass it until they were more than six months old. But there are cool studies about the brains of fetuses (fetii?) and when nervous activity starts.

The baby will one state of consciousness. The toddler another. The 5 year old another. Etc, ad nauseum.
Yes, it is the same body, but the thought processes are completely different.
