Ah, information assymmetry. That fly in the ointment of capitalism. I would be very interested to hear hardcore capitalists' (i.e. libertarians or anarcho-caps) response to the issue of information assymmetry.

most of the photographers I've met at UW have been cute girls, while most photographers I've met at conferences have been raging douchebags

Keep in mind too, that the more talented (and dare I say professional) photographers who use professional equipment are going to charge more for their work, because they have invested both the time and money in further refining their skills. They also value their skills adequately, as opposed to under-pricing their work.

Especially with wedding photography, you are often going to get what you pay for. As Kait says, if you're paying a lot less than other photographer's rates, you're not likely to get the same quality.

You are a "good" photographer, and certainly an opinionated one, but I would not consider you an exceptionally talented or professional photographer as of yet.

"To effectively cover a wedding, I would need both higher quality and a greater quantity of equipment."

So why don't you save up and get some better equipment and do paid gigs? You seem like you already know how to turn your hobby into an income, so why not?
