Phenylephrine: overpriced placebo

That's one of the lessons of the last few days. I didn't have any pseudoephedrine (the nasal decongestant that actually works) and was in no condition to go out for a few days. So I was using the substitute that one need not sign for as it was all I had. I might as well have not bothered. I knew it was less effective, but the past couple days ( Read more... )

Beware - I have been reading a lot of material about drugs from Dr. Thomas Hale for my work with breastfeeding mothers. I have been entertained to find the number of drugs which are labled "Probably safe, but ineffective and therefore not worth taking due to potential risk."

One was Nasonex, yes, the decongestant that you see all the bee commercials on.

And I was prescribed it, and it did live up to it's reputation as being worthless. (Well, it cost me a pretty penny, but *should* be labeled as worthless.) Pseudophederine is not allowed to nursing women. Period. It's an effective enough drug that when it dries up one gland, it dries them all!
