Prompt by nightrider101: Five times the Master wanted to let the Doctor go during the Year That Never Was.

The first week was worst. It must have been the long absence that made the Doctor so talkative. Which was bullshit, of course - the Doctor had always been talkative. But now he insisted on talking ( Read more... )

I like it!

...the Doctor had always been talkative. But now he insisted on talking about them.

I'm chortling at the image of the Doctor, even though aged and in his wheelchair, gabbing the Master's ears off!

The Doctor...looking into his eyes, so eager and needy and desperate. But...the Master saw the betrayal hidden beneath all that and knew that even now the Doctor would choose the people of this planet over him.

Especially here, you really capture the complexity, and the contradictions, of how Doctor feels about the Master.

And I love how the Doctor throws the chess game :)

And it occurs to me that these two quotes...

[the Doctor's POV]...their first encounters as enemies, when their fights had still been somewhat innocent.

[the Master's POV]...in the end he had to admit that fighting the Doctor had always been more fun than actually winning those fights.

...are like "bookends" to the story, as they neatly sum up the relationship. Nice work!

OK, you can continue torturing the Doctor go back to Pendulum now :)

Thank you!

I'm actually writing at least 500 words for Pendulum each day. At this rate I'd say I'll be done in two or three days.

Oh, yes!!

This was brilliant!

A perfect mix of haunting humor and the complexity behind the Master and the Doctor's relationship.

I especially liked this bit: Soon the Master even considered giving his only worthy enemy a chance to escape, just to see what he would do to stop him. Everything had to be better than this passive silence.

Great job!

Very nice exploration! And this?---

...in the end he had to admit that fighting the Doctor had always been more fun than actually winning those fights.

Really very sad in the full context of LotTL. The whole of the fifth entry is, since the Master doesn't get to let the Doctor go and "wins" even though it's not as fun as fighting the Doctor.

Thank you! It wasn't entirely easy to come up with plausible scenarios here.
