Summary: What she wanted, she thought as she turned away from the window, was a lover who remembered that they had met before Donna’s car had broken down in front of Sarah’s house three months ago.

The rain was falling steadily from the sky, never lessening or getting stronger. The sky presented its clouds as a single, closed cover, with no distinguishable variations of grey. The air didn’t move.

Donna was standing on the lawn, her head bent back so she could see the featureless sky, her red hair sticking to her face and turned nearly black by the water. Sarah Jane watched her through the window and sighed. She had no desire to get rained on. What she wanted was a hot cup of tea, a good book and a couch to relax on for the rest of the day. What she wanted was not a care in the world. What she wanted, she thought as she turned away from the window, was a lover who remembered that they had met before Donna’s car had broken down in front of Sarah’s house three months ago.

The thin light falling in through the windows was not enough to chase away the shadows in the room. Sarah didn’t turn on the light as she entered the kitchen. Feeling oddly detached from her task and the world, she put on the kettle for tea and left the house. The grass was cool and wet under her bare feet.

Donna didn’t turn around - not when Sarah approached, not when she was close enough to touch. Wrapping her arms around the taller woman from behind, Sarah rested her cheek against her back, the coolness of the soaked shirt making her shiver.

“What are you thinking of?” she asked, keeping the dread out of her voice, the raindrops falling on her like a million possible answers. What are you seeing up there, instead of the clouds?

For the longest time, Donna didn’t say a word. Then she shook her head, slowly, as if returning from far away. “I don’t know,” she said, nothing in her voice. “I don’t know. I thought I was recalling a dream, but it’s gone.”

“Ah,” said Sarah Jane and reminded herself that this was the best answer she could hope for.

-

They drank their tea in the silence of the living room, never turning on the lights, never speaking; Donna staring out of the window at the water running down, Sarah looking into the cooling cup clasped in her hands, watching her shadowy reflection in the liquid until it was too dark to see.
