„Why him?“ she asks, unsure what to think but sure she doesn’t like the idea.

“He’s the obvious choice,” they answer as if it was indeed obvious. “He knows how to fight. He knows how to survive. We need survivors. People who go into battle and come back. That’s how you win a war: by having more people left at the end than the enemy does. ”

She thinks about it.

“He only cares for himself. He’d run.”

“We can make him fight.”

“How?”

“By planting the urge into his mind. The drums of war, constantly driving him to battle. We won’t even have to ask him.”

She isn’t convinced.

“He could fight against us, not them.”

“Then we shall end his life. By all we know about him his survival instincts will make him cooperate with us if his existence is threatened.”

They know about him, but they do not know him. He’s a legend for them, little more for her, and she doesn’t believe that is enough.

She will not ask the one who’d know.

“He wouldn’t react kindly to you messing with his head. I fear he would take the drums you give to him and turn them against us.”

They have already considered that.

“He won’t know,” they promise. “We will manipulate his memories when we take him from the matrix. He will remember always having heard them. The distant thunder, sounding through all his regenerations.”

“He will still turn against us once it is over,” she prophecies, wanting to convince them and herself that this is wrong.

“We can execute him as soon as we do not need him anymore.” The words leave their mouths easily. He is a criminal and doesn’t have rights.

As for her, she is desperate, and there is no room for morals on a world that is already crumbling.

“Do it,” she says.
