Well, the City lights are a little bit different. [Chrono adjusts his jacket around his shoulders and then slips his hands into his pockets.] Different colors. But I think the stars seem a bit brighter...just farther away.
It actually seems almost lonely, doesn't it? They're much further away from us and farther from each other. They can't really change what they see, they only watch us from far away. Just as we watch them. Even if they can't actually see, I wonder how much they could have seen given the chance. How many smiles and mistakes do you think they've seen over time, where they have not been able to help with, not even make a small difference?
Yes, but when they fall and die they finally get that chance to make a difference they couldn't before. You can watch them fall and be marveled at the change they made in the sky. They give you a chance to appreciate them and perhaps even give you a smile, so even their long life has a meaning in the end.
[Adjusting her shawl, she turns to Chrono with a smile on her face.]
I asked you to come with me because there was something I wanted to tell you.
I've seen a lot just like those stars have, and for a long time I haven't been able to make that difference either. I've always accepted things and simply watched. But I decided I could not do that anymore. If something I could do while still as myself could make a greater difference then it would be worth it in the end.
[She pauses a moment then steps toward him, touching his cheek with her cold hand.]
The other day I spoke to a Deity for an exchange. If giving my life would keep me as myself and make another happy it would be more worth it more than treasuring the days I had left before Pandaemonium took over me. I thought it wasn't really a sacrifice for me as long as I could stay me and speak to the people I care for.
[Putting her hand down by her side, she takes a step back, still smiling.]
I'm sorry I didn't tell you, but I don't think you would have agreed even if I had, and it had to be a decision I made on my own. You can understand that, can't you?
[Chrono's eyes widen when Mary's hand touches against his cheek and he starts to digest her words. Part of him doesn't even want to believe it--Mary was dead? She died to save Rosette?
It takes him a moment or two before he can speak--and when he does, his voice is shaky.]
Mary...you're the one that traded for Rosette's life? You...you shouldn't have had to do that! I was going to trade for her!
I thought you might, but it just seemed like my best choice. As long as I'm dead Pandaemonium can't do anything. If I can't change, neither can she. So my death helped in more than one way. And I can still get to know you and be with others. Therefor I cannot say I regret my decision at all.
I know you would have found a way no matter what, wouldn't you? But I'm afraid it didn't seem like I had that time.
I understand if you're upset or mad with me. But I chose to do what I thought was best and I'm happy with it. Even so, I'm sorry. I know it's not entirely what you wanted, is it?
No! I'm not mad with you, I couldn't be, b-but--what would make you think that I'd want--?
[He takes a long, deep breath, combing his fingers through his hair.]
I didn't want you to die for me--or Rosette, or anyone! I want you both to be alive and happy. And you shouldn't have to give up anything for her, particularly when the reason Rosette died was--[his voice breaks]
Chrono, you're right. I didn't have to but I wanted to.
For now though, please look after Rosette as best you can. Aion knows what I've done. I'm worried about her. He cannot be a threat to me, so do not worry about my speaking with him. But please stay with Rosette as much as you can.
[She laughs a little, what a genius]
Though I suppose I shouldn't have brought you out here, should I? We should head back.

You really can see the stars much better here. But they really aren't that much different than the City lights, don't you think so?

I've...never thought of it that way. I guess it'd be really lonely to be a star.

[hesitates, then takes a deep breath]
I had a feeling there was something...what is it?

I'm afraid I make it rather obvious, don't I?

You mean...Rosette's in danger while we're here?
