My husband and I are trying for kids in the next few months. My doctor said get off my birth control now(as it was already giving me problems with break through bleeding) and keep a ovulation tracker

Thank you! That is very helpful! Both the ones I have been using predicted that I would ovulate right after this period is done and my next one would be in beginning of July. I just want to be sure that when we do have sex(but not to get pregnant) we're doing it at the right time. We were thinking of starting to try for kids in august or september. I mean, if it happens when we don't plan, then oh well. Does that make sense?
I don't know how long you've been on hormonal birth control but the first few months off the pill my cycle was very unpredictable (so much spotting!). Your body needs to return to it's natural cycle. It might also take a bit until you can get pregnant.
I'd give the app a month or two to gather information on you. If you have data on your couple of cycles (even if it's not 100% accurate), might help. Some apps (again, i mostly know clue) also let you input your own predictions about cycle length to help make predictions.
As you get off hbc, you might also be able to pick up on ovulation and enter that into the app.
Mine has been a little wonky for awhile now. I've had breakthrough bleeding almost two weeks before my off week. Spotting since my off week started(only when I had a BM, sorry if that's TMI) and then actual spotting yesterday. So the start would be yesterday or Sunday?
If you just stopped taking the pills last week and this is your withdrawal week, then you're not having a period yet. You won't have one until a few weeks go by and your body figures out that it's on its own and not following a chemical command. So your period will begin when you've been away from artificial hormones for several weeks.
Some people take time to establish a new natural cycle while others get one immediately. I'd been on HBC for 21-22 years without a break. When I stopped, I fell into a 26-day cycle immediately and it stayed that way until perimenopause hit. It was nice knowing my body was being predictable.
You might want to read up on FAM (fertility awareness method). By tracking your daily temperature and noticing changes in your cervical mucous, you'll get a much more accurate assessment of when you're ovulating. Good luck!
Ah that makes sense now! Duh! I won't put this one down as my period on the menstrual cycle app then. So I won't get my actual period for several weeks then? Wow, lots of info on FAM! I'll look into tha more. Thank you! This was helpful!

It might take a few cycles before the app gets the cycle prediction right.

I read it could take a few weeks to few months after getting off pills to get pregnant.
So once I get my actual period, I can start tracking ovulation?
