Whether or not it costs money might depend on which dealer you ask and what he is like. Going in there, by yourself, looking downtrodden and pregnant and trying to get a car with 200,ooo miles on it registered - well, there are probably decent individuals out there who would not charge you for it. Might even offer to drive it the 150 miles, but since there is never a guarantee they would not, within that 150, pull over and leave it running for a quick getaway in front of a bank, you might want to skip that.

Ask around people you know. Some garages up here also have a liscense to sell used cars, and they may be more amenable to lending than a regular dealer, esp. if someone who has all their work done there asks for you...

Or you could just put some moonshine in the back and run it 150 miles anyway, just to get that local feel...

On perhaps a more practical note - I don't think you have to have a car liscensed and inspected to run it on private property. Do you know anyone who owns a farm or factory or country estate nearby that might not mind you running the thing 150 miles on it?

I do suggest you do it, rather than Ed. I think if a cop does pick you up they are more likely to be indulgent of cute pregnant girl than another guy.

I was thinking race track but there probably isn't one near you that you could use. Too bad my neighbors with the mile long driveway one way don't live next to you so you could use it.

You obviously weren't offered a letter explaining the situation if you were to get stopped by a cop. I would have thought that would have been the least they could do.

And now that I look at this again I see you have already called DMV. Well, we tried...

A used car dealer, even if they can't help with a plate, might be able to tell you how this problem is usually solved. There might be a secret password to use with the DMV. Like instead of saying "here's the problem, what's the solution?" you can call up and say, "I want form #007-B"

Hmm. Yes, in the state I live in, a person can get a pass that allows one to drive a vehicle--a temporary pass. It lasts for three days, I think.

Maybe call another vehicle licensing office.

Also Dr. Poultry had a good idea--see if somebody can give you the exact name or number of the necessary forms. Ya speak the language, they answer... or something.
