Thinking out loud time.

Eep.

I saw a great trumpet going for a song on ebay. I nearly bought it (just missed out), but since then I've been looking for others...and I've seen one or two I'm really interested in...except they cost a tad more than I have money for :S

Argh. Keep having to remind myself I don't have the money. I really should take them off my watch list, right ( Read more... )

Never had you down as a trumpet player. Learn something new everyday.

Good song choice btw :)

Thankee. Been in a Tool mood today :)

I've been playing the trumpet about 14 years now...well, it would have been that long if my trumpet had been working. It isn't repairable and I haven't had the money to replace it, but every so often I get the urge to pick it up again!

I was pretty good at one point and played in various orchestras/bands/brass ensembles and even went touring around Holland and Germany! I play lots of jazz and classical, but my favourite music to play is big-band swing. Sooooooo much fun, makes you feel alive!! :D Not many people 'round here like that kind of thing though... :(

Well Tool are awesome, so I can't blame you. Damn - now I want to listen to some! :o)

Nah, it's always good to have an instrument you're passionate about :) 14 years is quite a long time. I'm sure you'll manage to scrape the funds together for one. How much would it set you back?

I've always been a woodwind person meself, but I've never been that good - I doubt I'd know what to do with a flute or a clarinet if it was put in front of me anymore :(

Um, well the cheaper alternatives are about £600. The shiny shiny Schilke is over £1000. If I was still playing in a band I'd probably get it, but it doesn't really make sense to have a fancy trumpet just to pootle around the house with!

You used to play flute/clarinet? :)

Try MIR in Halesowen for good second-hand instruments, also there's a trader who lets you have things on a trial basis not far from here; he let me try two flutes out for a week, even brought them to berley_girl's house so she could run her eye over them. Nice man, I'll look up his details for you...

Thank you, that's really cool.

I love MIR, but their second hand instruments can be a bit pricey to say the least. For trumpets the best thing to do is buy them from the US...sooooooo much cheaper, the only problem being that every single instrument is different and even professional instruments vary wildly in character, so it's important to try them out first.

Just checked out the website. I might get in touch with him, but I'd feel terribly terribly guilty for trying out the instruments if I have no intention of buying from him.

Did you buy either of the flutes, by the way? What did you think of his pricing relative to everywhere else?

I didn't buy either of them, he even had one fixed because I noticed there was a problem with one of the keys and then brought it back for me to try again. His pricing is superb. One of the ones I tried was made by Altus, and was an ex-army instrument. He was asking £600 for it, they're twice that much usually. Kim recommended I get it, but it just didn't feel right, my little finger had to bend quite far to get to the G# key, little things like that. Not for me. I've been to him again since and when I'm ready to try out another one I'll go back to him.
