Trial by Fire

Just got back from a C.W.I.L. meeting (my local writer's meeting for all things not mainstream with a heavy focus on sci-fi & fantasy) where I got my recent microfiction critiqued. On the bright side I now have a title for it, namely Virtual Strangers. On the other hand it's become quite clear that it still needs a lot of work...

genre: sci-fi, writing: original

Well, if it needs work then it needs work. I'd much rather know now and have a better chance of getting it accepted somewhere than to keep getting it rejected and not knowing why.

I hear those writing groups can be brutally honest, which is a good thing I guess, but it still never feels good to be criticized when you're proud of something..(do take critique with a grain of salt though, sometimes people try to fix parts that aren't broken!). Its the mark of a good writer though to be willing to go back and change things.

It's a great group, it really is and most people put a lot of thought and effort into the feedback. True, but when most people point out the same sentence or paragraph as giving them trouble, then you know there's something wrong!
