It's all extrapolation. "Given what the hell sort of lunacy is going on in the current MU, what the hell would the MU look like 50 years from now if said lunacy wasn't stopped?" The best sci-fi writers essentially take what they know about technology and society today and expand it as logically as they can, sometimes taking trends they find disturbing and pushing them to their logical conclusions. That's all I'm doing here.
