Kendell and I got back last Sunday from a trip to Egypt and Jordan. But why talk about that when there are always plenty more literal English surnames to share?
Try Google's Advanced Search option, specifying that you want pages that contain the words "legall" and "surname" but do NOT contain the words "legal" or "legally". In the regular search box, this search looks like:
"legall surnam -legal -legally"
Won't work if the origins involve legal stuff, but at least it narrows down your results to more relevant pages.
(Why yes, I *do* have a master's degree in library science, or "connecting people with the information they want". :)
Whoa -- you done gradjitated! Way to go! What's next? (Apologies if you posted all about this on your LJ while I was on vacation.)
And yeah, thanks for the Google tip -- that does get better results. Looks like "Legall" might have nothing to do with the word "legal" after all, but come from the French name "Le Gall".

Meantime, I discovered the exotic literal English surname of "Playfair"...

How could I forget to post that after discovering it while reading Wheatstone's Wikipedia entry? Shame on me.

Another surname I forgot: "Fry", as in Stephen...

Why would one need to be worthy of a fox?

It somehow figures that a boring person would get the name "Wildfire"...
