Vasari: Everyday Life

Vasari's book was full of little glimpses of what life was like back in the Renaissance. It was these glimpses that kept me going through the endless lists of altarpieces and frescoes.

Some things are surprisingly similar, but others are, of course, different.

This is technically just as much the case with any pension fund or annuity ...

Pension fund??? Who has those anymore?

(Well, Kendell's dad for one, but he kicks it old school.)

... or with your potential heirs for that matter.

All the more reason not to have any. ;)

Except that presumably those people would have even greater incentives for you to continue living, whereas the viagiste (?) would derive no particular benefit from your continued life, only from your death.

Good point! I should have remembered that -- I recently learned the word insula from an Astérix book.

I hadn't known Caesar grew up in one of those -- or was there a word for a more high-class kind of apartment building?
