Maybe irreverence for the ruler (whether expressed publicly or in private) is inevitable in an absolutist monarchy? Especially given that so many royal houses produced degenerate non-entities? I can see satire of absolute monarchs being quite welcome under Communist rule, too. But I defer to archivecats.
