2010 in books: still haven't jumped on the Stieg Larsson bandwagon.

For various reasons, my updates to my LJ fell way off in 2010. Given that some of those reasons were (a) my desktop blowing up and getting (semi-) resurrected; (b) a dodgy internet connection at home; and (c) dodgy electrical power at home (seriously, DTE, WTF?!), I should be devoutly thankful that I don't telecommute and/or take classes on-line ( Read more... )

I applaud you and this post. My book reviews on LibraryThing turned into suck for a few reasons: a) my reading for this year was crap, and b) my brain is degenerating and I can't remember how to write as if reading comprehension was part of the program. No one wants to read, "This good book. Got many words. Some colors. Me go bang rock now."

My best, worst, and total books read for 2010 I put in my reading journal, which is pen on paper.

Kind of a shame, 'cause I'd love to read your take on, say, Olivia Manning, Charles Portis, Henry Green (Living, Loving, Party Going), and the Southern Gothic gonzo, Barry Hannah (the NY Times has been a'twitter of late, what with the release of the posthumous short story retrospective Long, Last Happy; can't say I'd heard of him before his passing in 2010, but I'm on the fence as to whether to pick him up, given how often I've been burned by "experimental" writers).

I'm also curious as to your take on Joseph Hansen's Dave Brandstetter mysteries (I've read maybe 8 of the 11 -- yes, this is a mystery series with a definite ending, as opposed to one that peters out due to the loss of a publishing contract, the author losing interest, or the author's demise; Hansen's one-off thriller Steps Going Down was SoCal at its seamiest -- it puts me in mind of everything I've read about Patrica Highsmith's work -- but his roman à clef, the 1985 A Smile in His Lifetime? not so much ( ... )

Pshaw! You've got wit, you've got snark, you've got verve; you could own any book you'd care to review. (Uh, "own" as in how the kids use the word these days, not -- oh, never mind...)

I will take your advice, and I have written down books as I ought.

Thank you. :)
