Whoever said that they didn't like that the guy was centered is a perfect example of how most icon-makers have egos so big that they think that their icon-style is the only acceptable way to make icons. It used to be trendy (back in the Renaissance) to center images for stability, and then, since the Dada movement, it has been almost expected for things to be cropped so that the subject is off-center. It's so frustrating because I think it's much more challenging to pull of a good centered crop, and you did! Get over yourselves, people! (Sorry for the rant, but people that don't like an otherwise-good icon just because they're not personally into one of the elements piss me off!)
Well, I know I tend to not like centered crops unless they're done really well, as well, so I can sort of get that critique, but I think I pulled it off okay, so... I'm actually really surprised no-one said anything about the barely visible text on that icon.
At the risk of pissing you off, hehe, I have to say, a huge pet peeve of mine is slapping someone's name on an icon just because it's easy. In normal icontests, I tend to only vote for icons with name text on them if there aren't any icons I like better. In LIMS, I disregard the name thing and go on the style, though it still aggravates the hell out of me. I just go on the idea that, if you can't think of any text, don't use it, but that's ME. :)
Thank you, though, and I love reading other people's opinions!
I like the barely visible text! I hate when text is too visible and it doesn't blend with the icon.
Ugh! Me too! Haha, what made you think that would piss me off? No, but I totally agree. I love using song lyrics more than anything, which makes writing people's names even more uncreative! If you don't recognize who is in the icon, you won't fully-appreciate it anyway, and, if you do recognize who it is, then there's no need to write it!
Oh, hehe, me too! I'm just surprised no-one complained that it should have been more visible or something. I think it's great in certain situations, but otherwise, I like my text to blend into the icon, kind of like this one. *points to userpic* :D
*grin* Cause of the part about people who think their way of iconing is the best. I was sort of half teasing (I THINK, I can't remember, heh) - but I'm the same way. I write text based on what's going on in the picture, or if it's a lyrics challenge, I make sure I pick a picture that will represent the lyrics I chose, and I only remember two instances of people telling me that captions I put on an icon made no sense. The first time was this icon of Voldemort, and I was kind of thinking, "WHAT, you have no sense of humour??" The second time it was this icon, and I think it really DOES fit the picture, or at least the story of Snape's life that we know up till the end of DH.
But I do agree with what you said about the name thing, that's how I've always felt, too. :)
