Hmmm, your GIS-class might not help you - it usually explains the software and how to work woth ArcView or ArcGIS.
To learn the basics in mapping you really need to take cartography - it helps you with the basics, there are actually quite a lot - at least here in Germany. We have two different Cartography-courses that are compulsory, the third one is almost impossible to evade - who wants to write a test on the third GIS-course...

Thanks :) I will have to see if I can even fit the cartography class in next year.

On the bright side, I really didn't like the teacher who is teaching that intro to GIS class.

yea, we're all nuts :P

especially the volcanologists ;) I shall introduce myself to my OS hazards class as one. Bwahaha.
