Chapter 2: About my biologic family
Eight years had passed since Arthur “adopted” the twins, and with each year that passed the bond between them grew stronger, especially between Arthur and Alfred. But now, with 15 years, Mathew and Alfred wanted to know more about their real father.
And that got them back to that old photo their mother had on her pocket. A long time ago (Months after Arthur adopted them) they had showed Arthur the photo, and, in the innocence of their childhood, they’ve asked him if America was near.
Arthur chuckled and ruffled their hairs in an affectionate way.
- America is other continent- when the boys looked at him with confused eyes he clarified- Is very far away from here, you can’t go there without a ship or a plane.-
Then they’ve asked him to read them what it said in the back of the photo.
- It says: “Me and Alfred in the United States of America. October 1978” And below it there’s an address.-
- It doesn’t say who is mom with?- asked Alfred
- No, but I think is your dad, you look a lot like him! Especially you Alfred.-
And after that little chat about their “family”, they had gone to sleep.
Now, many years after that chat, the twins were looking at that old photo again, like it would give them the answer to their questions.
- You think Arthur was right and that’s our father?-
- Yeah, I do, If not why would mom be embracing him with such a loving face? I mean, we were born a few years after that-
- Maybe you’re right. Then what? You think that’s his address or something?-
- Probably, I mean, the background’s a big house. And, if not, it’s better trying than doing nothing-
- And what will we do Al? We can’t go to America! I mean, we don’t even have the money for that!-
- We can send a letter asking if they know the man in this photo. I mean, we can take a photo of the photo and send it with the letter. If they answer they do, then we have our first thread.-
- Guess that sound reasonable-
The door of their room opened suddenly and then a really tired Arthur was looking at them, but even if he was tired, he was smiling at them.
- I came to tell you dinner will be ready in short, so you should go and wash your hands.-
- Thanks Arthur!-
After Arthur had closed the door they continued the talk.
- But what will we do if they answer? I don’t want to leave Arthur’s side- said Mathew with a sad face
- So we will bring him with us! - said Alfred like it was as simple as saying it
- I don’t think we would be able to convince him of that Alfred, you know he don’t really likes going to other countries. Also, there’s that money issue, we don’t have money enough to go to America-
- Don’t worry about that, we will see when the answer comes!-
And with that they left the room.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Many months passed after they sent the letter, and there had been no answer. Alfred was starting to lose his hope (Mathew had already give his up). Arthur, on the other hand, was getting more stressed each day that passed. His last school year exams were consuming all his time and energy. But, still, he always had some time to share with his two little lights.
- Brother Arthur, are you sure you want to go to the school’s festival with us? You should use this time to sleep- said Mathew that Saturday
- Don’t worry about me Mathew, I couldn’t loose this day. I mean, today’s the show of the music club and the last match of the soccer tournament, isn’t it? I can’t loose this opportunity to watch you in your club activities- Mathew smiled a warm smile; Arthur always did this things for them, even if he was really tired.
- Thanks Brother Arthur-
Now that the twins were older (15 years) they had showed everyone that they were really different on the inside (Also, now they wore glasses). Mathew was more in the intellectual things, like music and writing. He was in the music and in the literature club. On the other hand, Alfred was more of the sport kind; he was in the soccer club, also he was the captain of said club. Needless to say, Arthur was very proud of both “little brothers”. Also, Francis was really proud of Mathew too.
- By the way, where’s Alfred?-
- Probably preparing for the match. As the captain he will be very busy today- Arthur looked really proud of Alfred, and Mathew knew that. Also, he knew he was proud of him too, but always when someone talked about Alfred, Arthur eyes looked different… like the looks Francis gave him when he was proud of him. Like Arthur felt a different kind of love for Alfred. Or that is what he thought.- Do you know if Francis is going to come?- asked Mathew with red cheeks
- That frog? Well, he said he would. Don’t worry about that Matt, if he told you he would come, I’m sure he will, he really cares about you- Mathew looked relieved, probably Arthur was right. And that relief didn’t go unnoticed by Arthur.
- Mathew, Can I ask you something?-
- Sure brother Arthur-
- What do you feel for…?- But he was interrupted as a certain French came in view.
- Dear Anglaterre, Mathieu! Good to see you both! But where’s Amerika? I thought he would be with you-
- Oh, he’s preparing for the soccer match-
- Ah! Oui! I thought I saw him earlier in the soccer court-
- Then, I’m going to the music room- said Mathew
- Good luck Mathew, I know you’ll be fantastic-
- Good luck, dear Mathieu- Then the teenager left
- You have done a good job raising them, Anglaterre- Said Francis after Mathew left
- ?-
- I mean, that sadness you could see in their eyes that first months, eight years ago, now seems forgotten. I think you, as strange as this sounds, have mended their hearts with your strange loving-
- I’m taking that as a compliment. And than you, but I think you also have merit in that, especially in Mathew-
Then they felt silence for a bit as they walked through the stands.
- However, I think thing may become more difficult for you now, dear Arthur- Arthur frowned
- Why do you think that?-
- Haven’t you thought that maybe they would want to look for their real family now that they are passing through their adolescence?-
- Well, It’s only natural that they want to know who their real father is. But I don’t see why that would be a problem-
- Tch, Didn’t you say his father lived in the United states?-
- Yes, indeed-
- Then, they will want to go to the E.E.U.U Will you be able to let them free Arthur?-
- What are you talking about Francis? I mean, is not like I don’t want them to grow… but they’re too young now for going overseas. And they don’t have the money-
- Oh, so you admit you wouldn’t let them leave if they wanted to?-
- They’re too young-
- But weren’t you younger than them the first time you went to other country alone? I think you were ten-
- That’s a different situation. My parents had died and I had to go alone.-
- But you could manage all by yourself. Don’t you think they should be able to do things on their own too?-
- I repeat, this and that are different. I had no other option. I won’t let them go alone to other country now, they’re too young-
- See, that’s why this could be a problem-
- No, you’re overreacting. They had told me anything similar to what you say, so that shouldn’t be a problem now-
- Ah, but I didn’t say right now It would be a problem. And, anyway, if they were worried about that now you probably wouldn’t notice Arthur, they’re not kids anymore, they are not meant to tell you everything they do or think- Francis smirked, and Arthur got angrier and angrier by second
- Can we stop talking about your imaginary worries? I won’t be able to concentrate in Alfred and Mathew’s presentations if I continue listening to your stupid worries.-
- Oui, let it be as you want; close your eyes to reality, but then don’t say I didn’t warn you-
- Belt up-
- - - - - - - - - - -
After the school festival had ended, the four of them were in their way home. Francis would go to dinner with them.
- And did you see that awesome goal I made?! I mean, there’s no doubt WHY I’m the captain of the Falcons! And…- But Alfred was interrupted by two female students that we’re walking towards them
- Excuse me, are you Arthur Kirkland? The president of the student council?-
- Yes. May I help you in something?-
- Oh, yes we wanted to know if you and your friend, superior Francis, had something to do tomorrow-
- eh?-
- Of course we don’t have something to do tomorrow, we are free beautiful ladies. So, were you planning in inviting us somewhere?- The two girls blushed and started giggling. Then nodded.- Then we will go pick you up at four. May I ask where this beautiful ladies live?-
And as the girls gave them their addresses, Alfred and Mathew were left forgotten. And, as the students flirted with Arthur and Francis, especially when with Arthur, Alfred felt anger and something else building inside him. He clenched his fists and Mathew watched him with worry.
- What’s the matter Al?-
- Nothing Mathew, let’s just go home by ourselves, since it seems they’ve forgotten about us.-
- eh? Bu what about Arthur and Francis and…-
- Let’s just go- said Alfred with a fierce voice that freaked Mathew a bit.
- What’s the problem Al? This isn’t just like you, I mean, those girls did interrupt you, but that wasn’t that bad to just go away like this-
But Alfred kept silence until they reach home, where he starting kicking wall, like he was very angry with someone.
- Al?-
- Who do those girls think they are!?- said Alfred between kicks
- Calm down Al, I think you’re overreacting, I mean, they were impolite and all, but…-
- I’m not talking about that Matt, I mean, Arthur was talking with ME, and he was supposed to spend tomorrow with US. Sunday’s the only day he doesn’t study like a mad person from the morning; Sunday’s the only day he has time to spend with us to do what we want. Who do they think they are?! Stealing him from us!-
- Emm, Al, don’t you think you’re being too Selfish. Arthur has passed all this years only with us, I mean; he never goes out to parties or dates because he says he wants to be only with us. I think it’s good for him to go out like brother Francis does, not that I’m not a bit jealous, I also like the family Sundays we spend together, but Arthur has to be allowed to have a life beside being with us and going to school. Even we will want to go out with someone someday- said Mathew in a very mature way
- I’m not saying he cannot go out with people Matt, I’m saying THOSE girls are trying to steal him from us. Now it’s just one date, but then there will be a lot more, and Arthur will be less time with us, and we won’t even notice and he will be no more with us!-
- That’s overreacting Al, don’t be that pessimistic-
- I’m not being pessimistic, I’m being REALISTIC!-
- No, you’re being selfish AND pessimistic. Calm down Al, I think Arthur really loves us, and he would not leave us aside only for a girl. He deserves to have some fun from time to time-
- But he could have gone out with Francis, or some male friend, like that Spanish guy Antonio. - finally Alfred stopped kicking the wall and took sit in the stairs that lead to the door.
- What difference would that make? He would still be out without us on Sunday-
- Because they would not be flirting with him- and then something clicked in Mathew’s teenage mind. He didn’t want to see it before, because he thought it was stupid, but now it was all clear.
- Al… Are you jealous? - He asked Mathew with amusement. Alfred turned beet red and then starting moving his face from side to side in a “no” way.
- No! I’m not jealous! How can you even think that Matt?! I’m only saying those girls will steal him from us!- but he looked aside, hiding his face
- Al. You ARE jealous-
- Shut up, I’m not jealous-
- Yes you are. Oh my… then that means…-
- I DON’T LOVE HIM MATT, STOP SAYING WEIRD THINGS!!-
- I didn’t say that Al.-
- Yes you did, and don’t say that again, because it’s not true-
- What’s not true?-
- WAA!- Alfred jumped from his seat in surprise. Arthur and Francis were right in front of them- Don’t go scaring people like that!-
- I didn’t mean to scare you Alfred, But you two didn’t answer when we talked to you, so we came near to ask what happened.-
- Oh, Alfred and I… were having a race on which of us reached home first- Lied Mathew
- Eh? And who won?- Asked Francis with a knowing look in his eyes. Mathew knew that Francis knew he was lying
- Eh? Ah… Alfred of course!-
- Yes? Well, congratulations lad- congratulated the French man with a false grin
- Em… Thanks?-
- You guys are strange today, did something happen?- asked Arthur
- No! Nothing! It was just a race!- Alfred grinned, trying to sound convinced- Now, let’s go eat dinner, I’m starving!- and so he pushed the older ones inside
- We are not done yet Al- told him Mathew in a whisper as they entered behind the other two.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- And you said you are not jealous?- asked Mathew hiding behind a bush
- Of course I’m not! I’m doing this for our own sakes!-
- Yeah, right… So spying on them when they’re in a date is not being jealous-
- Right-
Mathew felt the need to punch his brother until he admitted he was right. But he knew that wouldn’t happen, also, Alfred was much more stronger than him, so he would be the one beaten up.
They were hiding behind a bush now. When Alfred told Mathew he wasn’t going to allow those girls to take Arthur away, Mathew would’ve suspected something like this. But still he tagged along, at least to make sure Alfred didn’t screw it up.
- So how will this help us?-
- Easy, we just have to ruin their romantic occasions and they’ll never want to go out again with Arthur.-
- I insist, aren’t you being too selfish? What if Arthur really likes them?-
- Like them?! Are you crazy? I mean, look at his face! He’s obviously bored!- Mathew looked were the four teenagers were, Arthur was smiling a little shy smile. But still, he was smiling.
- He doesn’t seem uncomfortable-
- You’re just not looking correctly. Now, let’s get near them so we can’t ruin their date- Mathew sighed
- And Arthur, what do you do? I mean, besides being the top 1 student- said the girl that was dating Arthur drawing herself near said blonde
- Eh? - Arthur was blushing and starting to feel nervous- well, I like embroidery and gardening too. Also I like reading a lot.-
- Embroidery? Wow! I have never known a man that could sew!-
- Well, since my parents died when I was young, I had to learn to sew by myself and then I found it was really a relaxing thing.- The girl was now looking at Arthur with heart-shaped eyes
- Oh Arthur, you’re so mature and skilled! And even if you don’t have parents, you are so optimistic-
- Well, I think I couldn’t have survived by myself if I wasn’t optimistic. Also, I have something that keeps me optimistic when things seem dark- and Arthur smile changed to one of tenderness and loving, the one he showed only when he was thinking or talking about his little lights
- And what would that be?- asked the girl, delighted of Arthur’s lovely smile
- My…- but Francis interrupted him
- How about some ice creams ladies?-
- Sure!- answered both of them
- Then we will go to get you some. Let’s go Arthur-
- Oh, ok- and so they went to the ice cream shop.
- If you excuse me Arthur, I will leave this to you for a bit, I think I saw someone I have to talk with- said Francis with a mysterious tone
- Eh? Ok, it’s fine. Just be sure to pay me back for the ice creams-
- Oui- and the French left.
- How strange, where do you think Francis went? I haven’t seen someone familiar here-
- I don’t know Al, Can we go home now? I don’t think this will work-
- Yes, I also think you should head home right now kids- Mathew and Alfred froze, where had Francis come from?
- Fra-Francis… What a surprise to see you here! Weren’t you on a date? - asked Alfred trying to sound casual
- Yes, but I saw two little rats trying to ruin it, so I came to send them back home- Mathew and Alfred gulped
- It’s not what you think Francis; we’re just… enjoying a walk in the park-
- Hidden behind a bush? I don’t think so. Now go back home before I decide I will tell Arthur about this. Oh, he would be so disappointed!-
Mathew and Alfred stood up immediately and starting walking back home, if Arthur knew he would be pissed and they didn’t want him pissed with them. But before they were too far away, Francis shouted:
- And don’t think you will escape a talk with me about this, boys!-
They were in problems.
- - - - - - - - -
(…)
- Seems to me you’re in love with Anglaterre, dear America-
- I’m not-
And here they were, having a “normal” talk after they had been caught spying Francis and Arthur’s date in the park.
- Yes you are, and denying it won’t make it less true-
- I told you I’m not-
- And I told you that you are. Believe someone that has lived more than you and that knows more of le’amour. -
- You’re only three years older than me-
- But I’m far more experienced than you in love, dear America. And I tell you, denying your love will only make you suffer more-
Alfred pouted but, deep in his heart, he knew Francis and his brother were right. He left out a sigh, and Mathew made a brief winning gesture.
- And what if I were? It’s not like Arthur would love me back in the same way I would, he still sees me as a kid-
- Well, there you have a point dear Alfred-
- But I think he loves you too, Brother. But he still doesn’t notice it, like you-
- You’re probably imagining things Matt. For him we still have seven-
- Oh, but Mathieu has a point there. The way he loves you is different of the way he loves dear Mathieu, I have seen it in his eyes. But he still doesn’t want to notice you’re growing older, America-
- Yeah, sure, and there are cows flying outside- Alfred sulked
- Believe me! I would not lie you in this brother, I really think he loves you in the same way; it’s only that he has yet to discover it-
- Hear Mathieu, your brother has a sense for this and you know it-
- Sure. Then why did he went out with that girl? There’s no way he could love me, I’m a boy-
- Oh, but Anglaterre said he didn’t like that girl, he was pretty uncomfortable indeed. Also, have you ever heard him talk about a girl?-
- No-
- Then there you have your answer, If he liked girls he would date girls, but, even if many have asked him to go out with them, he always said no.-
- But that was because he had to take care of us-
- Ahh, there’s the answer. He always prefer you two over any girl, and that’s not normal for a teenager, believe me. Also, his eyes change when he talks especially about you America. Every time he talks about his “precious Alfred” his eyes sparkle and change to a loving-look. Even his smile softens and looks loving. You just don’t notice it America, but hear us, he does love you-
- Yeah, right…- but hope was starting to grow in his teenage heart.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
A week after that talk, the twins received a surprise in their mail.
- Al… is this?-
- Yeah Matt, I think it is our answer…- both of them stormed to their room and started reading the letter. It was the answer letter to the one they sent months ago!
- I can’t believe this is real! He’s… He’s our father, and is still living there!-
- And he wants to meet us! We have to go Matt, It’s our only chance, he says he’s going to change house soon!- At that Mathew looked unhappy
- We can’t go Al, we don’t even have the money-
- We will find a way to go Matt, This is our only chance! We can’t miss it. Let’s go now, there’s no time to loose- he tend his hand to Mathew.
But his twin didn’t take it.
- We can’t Alfred, what about Arthur? What about Francis? I don’t want to leave them-
- Then we will ask them to go with us, come on Matt!- But his brother shook his head
- No Alfred, they already have a life here. They’re about to enter the university too, we can’t just ask them to leave their lives just for us. And I don’t think it would even be worth it. If our father wanted to meet us he could’ve contacted us before. At least he could have tried looking for us, he knew we were in London, yet he never came. I bet he also knew we were poor, but he never came for us. I’m sorry Alfred, but I’m not going, I can’t leave everything Arthur has given us just for someone who didn’t even know we were alive-
- Matt, you’re being silly! How could he have known we where here? We hadn’t even contacted him!! Also, I think Francis and Arthur would understand! Come on!- But Mathew shook his head again, and looked him with a very serious look.
- No Alfred, I won’t go, this isn’t worth the sacrifice, I won’t go looking for someone that’s no my family. You shouldn’t go, he never cared, and nothing tells us he cares now, and if that were the case he would come for us. Arthur and Francis are our family now, they’re the only ones that love us as much as to leave their lives aside for our sake. Forget it- Alfred got angry and stomped out of the room, looking really angry
- You’re just scared Mathew. I thought you really wanted to know our father, looks like I was wrong. And you will regret it Matt, you’ll see, I’ll meet our father and he will be all loving and all, just like mom- and he shut the door. Mathew sighed and prayed, hoping his brother would come back to his senses.
- - - - - - - - - -
Mathew would see, Arthur would support him and even go with him, Matt would see.
He knocked Arthur’s studio’s door.
- Come in!-
And he opened the door.
- Oh, Alfred is you. What may I help you with? - And he smiled at him in a very loving way. Alfred felt his heart go faster.
- I…- he gulped, he had to be brave- I want to go to America. Can I?-
- Of course you can go to America when you’re older Alfred. You don’t have to ask for permission for that-
- No, You got it wrong, I mean now- Now Arthur frowned
- And why the hurry Alfred?-
- This- And Alfred showed him the letter. And, as Arthur read, his frown grew deeper and his face angrier.
- Why didn’t you tell me about this Alfred?- asked Arthur in an angry voice Alfred had never heard him use with them
- Because we weren’t sure if he even lived still there. But now he answered is our chance to meet him! I mean, he’ll be moving soon, so we have to hurry, you can even come with us Arthur!-
- No-
- Eh? Why?- he was getting angry again
- You’re too young- Arthur went back to his studies, like the discussion had ended
- I’m not, you traveled alone when you were ten!-
- This and That are different Alfred. I had no other option, you have. I had to, you don’t-
- Yes I Have to! They’re no different!-
Yes they are, and you Don’t HAVE TO go. If this person wanted to meet you, he would come here to see you. Asking their kids to go there alone, is he nuts?-
- Don’t talk about him, you don’t even know him! And I HAVE TO go, I will never meet him if I don’t go now!-
- I said no Alfred, and when I say no is no-
- You can’t deny me this opportunity Arthur, you can’t!-
- Oh yes I can’t, you’re not going there now Alfred. Now go to your room, dinner will be ready soon-
- You have no right over me Arthur!-
- Yes I have, and I said no, no go to your room, this discussion is over- Arthur looked at him in a very menacing way.
- YOU CAN’T STOP ME ARTHUR!-
- Yes I can Alfred! I’m in your charge, so go to your room NOW!-
- NO, I WON’T, YOU DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT TO GIVE ORDERS TO ME, YOU’RE NOT MY FATHER, NOR MY BROTHER. ARTHUR YOU’RE NOT MY FAMILY!- And after saying those words, he regretted them because of the hurt he saw in Arthur’s eyes. Arthur looked about to cry, but he breath in and looked Alfred with cold eyes
- Go to you room Alfred, now-
And Alfred left, his might gone because of sadness. After he closed the door he heard Arthur cry, and he started crying too, he didn’t want to hurt his beloved person.
- - - - -
That night was the first one they ate alone. Arthur had shut himself in his room with a bottle (well, more than just one) of alcohol. Mathew had heard the fight, but said nothing, looking that his brother was really hurt.
- You should apologize-
- I won’t- Mathew looked at his brother with a serious look
- It’s not too late to apologize Al, don’t be childish, you know Arthur was right and what you said was wrong. You really hurt him-
- No one asked you your opinion Mathew. I’m going to sleep- and Mathew was left eating alone, hurt and alone.
It was still dark when Alfred woke up. He had silently put his things in his backpack, ready to leave.
He silently walked to his brother’s bed, leaving a note at his side.
- I’m sorry Matt, but I have to go- and he left. In the dark a tear rolled down Mathew’s eye.
He walked through the corridor, still hearing some sobs coming from Arthur’s room. And each sob was like a stab to his heart.
He silently entered Arthur’s room. Said person was sleeping in the floor, with a bottle of rum in his hand. He slowly dragged a cover to cover him up. He even took the bottle out of his hand and put it (all of them) in the trash can. Then he bent a kissed Arthur’s forehead lovingly.
- I’m sorry Arthur. I’m sorry for saying you weren’t my family, and I’m sorry for making you suffer. I’m sorry. But I have to leave; I know I would regret it all my life if I don’t go now. I promise I will come back, and I hope you can forgive for this. I’m sorry- he had started crying in a minute, and a tear fell in Arthur’s face, the older one moved but didn’t awake. Alfred left a note for Arthur too, and was about to leave when he felt a tug on his shirt. He looked down, scared he had been caught, but it was only Arthur’s hand. He was tugging him in his dream.
He smiled softly and sadly and bent down again.
- I’m sorry. I love you. Good bye. I love you- and again he was crying.
He bent down further, until his mouth was hovering over Arthur’s, and, without much thinking, he kissed Arthur softly.
Then he stood up, being careful enough to remove Arthur’s hand from his shirt.
- Good bye and Thanks-
And he was gone, never looking back.
The crying shout the neighborhood heard the next day made them all shiver in pain and sorrow, and that wasn’t even the ten percent of what the one that shout belonged to felt in his heart.
